Disney is behind the times.
by Philip S. Mclaughlin
This movie is well made and absolutely hilarious. However, the transfer is in pan and scan. Just before the film, Disney has inserted a title card that says "this film has been formatted to fit your screen." What planet do the Disney people live on? Don't they know that most TVs today are widescreen? Fortunately, I used to collect laser discs. The laser disc version of this film was released only in widescreen, and I have it.

George of The Jungle
by Carol Martin (Lawrenceville, GA USA)
Another Christmas gift for my grandson, as per his request. Again, he must have enjoyed it in the movie theater or wouldn't have asked for it....

Great Kid Movie
by Michael Hendricks (League City, TX)
George of the Jungle I have watched this movie many times with my three grandkids. They and I love the movie. It's funny, and has just enough innocent naughtiness for the grandsons to really like it (gorilla gas, poop, etc.) They also like George of the Jungle II.

great comedy for all ages
by Peter Tarique ((Brooklyn, NY United States)
Good-natured, family-oriented comedy about a clumsy ape man who lives in the jungle amongst the animals and never seems able to stop crashing into trees. During a safari, he encounters a beautiful damsel in distress (Mann) and immediately falls in love with her. Despite their differences in lifestyles, he leaves his beloved jungle and travels to the big city where he tries to win her affections and adapt to civilization. It more ways than one this inherently goofy, episodic film resembles an extended television series with zany characters and a predictable setup, but it's smart, funny, and the gags are right on target. Fraser, never more likable, is perfectly cast, aided by a sly narrator and an over-the-top Cleese who really scores as the voice of ape.

By George this movie is fun!
by Brenda Baker (San Diego, CA United States)
This movie is good, innocent fun for all ages. It has a silly bad guy, an even sillier good guy, and a monkey that talks. Very entertaining and family friendly.
George of the Jungle Summary
The Clumsy Ape Man From Jay Ward's 1967 Television Cartoon Takes On A Jungle Of Another Kind In Live-action When He Follows A Visiting San Francisco Resident Back To The City By The Bay. There Aren't As Many Trees, But He Somehow Manages To Find Plenty Of Other Things To Crash Into--not The Least Of Which Are Modern Society's Social Norms.
Not even the executives at Disney could have predicted the runaway success of this live-action movie inspired by Jay Ward's goofy 1960s cartoon character. Not only did
George
make a killing at the box office, but Disney's marketing wizards turned it into one of their best-selling videos. It's hard to begrudge the movie's success, even if this is the kind of mindless entertainment that caters to the lowest common denominator. In any case, it's obvious that kids love this movie, in which the idiotic George (Brendan Fraser) repeatedly swings into trees and attracts the attention of a lovely jungle explorer (Leslie Mann) who decides to call off her engagement to a wealthy snob (Thomas Hayden Church) in favor of the vine-swinging hunk with an elephant named Shep (that thinks it's a dog) and an ape named Ape (with a proper Brit voice provided by John Cleese). Filled with slapstick gags and some funny special effects, the movie can be a bit of a trial for adults, but it's a hilarious treat for its intended audience.
