AKA Master Killer or Shaolin Master Killer
by J. Tway
My favorite martial arts movie from my teenage years. I'd been looking for the movie "Master Killer" but saw the plot of this and bought it because the synopsis on the back of the box sounded very familiar. I was thrilled to watch it and find out it was indeed "Master Killer". DEFINITELY a must for any fan of the genre.

Classic Movie Great Purchase
by
I have been wanting to get this classic movie since I seen it as a child. Great purchase and excellent delivery time. I was very impressed with the easy process. Thank you so much for helping me start my collection of 70's and 80's Kung Fu movies.

Focus is on training and not enough action.
by E. A. Hurst (From Beyond)
to start this IS a good movie, but it's just that - 'a good movie' not really a Kung Fu action movie. Here's what i mean the movie overemphasizes training far too long that by the time the actual action begins you become bored, or bored leading up to the action, As always the cinematography/choreography in the S.B. films is top notch and this one is no exception but if you are looking for the fast, furious beat em'up 'this clan-betrayed-our clan' style of a movie, look elsewhere this one moves slow, (story is good)but overall tedious, and well... not enough action by "Action" it needs to move in all directions be fast, unexpected, colorful, creative, whereas this is just uninspiring/hum drum "a weakling becomes a monk" type of film. there are ga-zillions of other S.B. titles much better then this at lest entertaining wise. If you are fan of any kung fu then by all means pick this up it is worth the purchase but only for the hardcore fan, if you have a varied eclectic taste this just may not be your cup of tea. some worthy mentions.... Fist of the white lotus, House of traps, Crippling Avengers, Chinese Super Ninjas, Secret Rivals 1, and 2. Iron Armour, Brave Archer, anything with the venom's/Sonny Chiba etc..

The Classic of Classic Kung Fu (Martial Arts) Films!
by DJ Exquiz (NJ, USA)
The first copy I had of this movie was in the late 90s when I had just started college, and would take trips to New York by the Port Authority Bus Terminal (on 42st), my buddy would get all of the good Kung Fu movies and I always asked where he got them.
My friend directed me to a Kung Fu movie store (that also sold some other types of films I won't mention on Amazon, ahhemmm) across from the Port Authority, it was there I picked up this golden gem that at the time the English dub (aka bootleg) was called Masterkiller, which also became the name of the last member to join the original Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) Wu Tang Clan hip hop group, but more on that later.
The original English dub that most people who grew up watching or owning on VHS was grainy, had terrible audio, and looked about 15-20 years older than the movie actually is (it was released in 1978 I believe).
Now with the Dragon Dynasty (Celestial Pictures) series you can own this classic of classics in DVD quality glory, the audio is great, the picture looks like it was shot using an HD camera.
The plot of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin ( I still want to write Masterkiller, ha ha) is the classic coming of age story of a young man (San Te played by Gordon Liu-Kill Bill - Volume Two) being forced by extraordinary circumstances (his family is killed by Ming Dynasty officials for being rebels) to seek refuge in the Shaolin Temple. During his stay in Shaolin he develops a sense of responsibility for himself and those around him, and also learns how to release a major can of whoop____ on anybody that challenges his martial arts skills, as a result of his rigorous training.
If you are new to the martial arts genre, but you've liked movies like Kung Fu Panda (Widescreen Edition) (watching with your kids, etc) or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon then this movie is where Martial Arts movies as spiritual or moral epics started, however Bruce Lee's films paved the way.
This DVD does contain some great extras, such as an audio commentary by the Rza (music producer and sometimes actor- Kill Bill sountracks, Afro-Samurai soundtrack, Wu Tang Clan)The Wu-Tang Manual: Enter the 36 Chambers, Volume One, accompanied by a well know film critic (Andy ?) whose name escapes me right now. Also there are some interesting stories by the Rza about how he would sneak into the old adult film theatres in Manhattan, around 42st and Times Square (in the 70s and 80s before it was the cleaner Manhattan we know today) and watch Kung Fu movies all night, worth it just to remember what New York was like back in the day when I was younger.......Have fun and enjoy.

Different Name
by Josh (NY)
I bought this movie under the title: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin at walmart. If you already own this title do not purchase.
The description of this product seems to be EXACTLY the same: inventing the 3 fold staff, creating a 36th chamber..
Shaolin Master Killer (Widescreen Edition) Summary
A pure old-school martial arts movie, beloved by aficionados, that also appeals to nonfans simply as a rousing action film. The often-imitated fact-based plot (see
The Karate Kid
) centers upon the rigorous training process undergone in the mid-19th century by the anti-Manchu Chinese patriot San Te (Gordon Liu). It's depicted as a grueling voyage into the unknown. Cast out of his home village when he stands up to the cruel warlord (Lo Lieh) who slaughtered his parents, the refugee seeks out the martial monks of the Shaolin Temple, who steer him through a torturous series of "chambers"--horrendous ordeals designed to build strength and agility--before he's even allowed to study boxing or swordfighting. Finally he defeats a rival by inventing a brand-new weapon, the three-section chain-linked staff. But innovation can be carried only so far; when San Te suggests opening a "36th chamber" in the temple that would teach Shaolin techniques to the populace at large (so that they can fight the nasty Manchus) he is drummed out of the corps. Naturally he returns to his home village, slaughters the baddies, and prepares to open China's first public Shaolin-style kung fu school. Many of the pupils San Te recruits in the final reel became legendary martial artists in their own right, the "Fathers of the Church" of the Chinese kung fu tradition. This is strong action entertainment with real historical resonance. --
