The Commitments

My husband and I love this movie. The lead singer was only 16 at the time this movie was made. Kind of movie with rock and soul(Irish) music.

You'll Watch This Over and Over Again!
by G. Durham (Florida)
Set in poor working class Dublin, this story brings to life a host of talented and witty young guys and gals who were brought together despite their raucous and rowdy personalities to form a Soul Band. Great Music and funny situations; you'll enjoy every minute! Accents and Irish lingo are hard to understand at times, so be prepared to rewind in order to catch every outrageous line!

An all-time favorite
by sarabella (Dallas, TX)
I just love this movie. From the first time I saw it, it just seemed so loud, fun, real and overall irresistable. I've owned it on VHS as well as DVD.
I spent some time in Ireland many years ago and the characters just seem so real and the story just well played out in the film.
If you don't like foreign films or your favorite movies involve Madea or cars racing on public streets, it may not be for you, but for everyone else- watch this!

"Who are your influences?" - After 20 Years It's Still In My Top 10
by KJJ (Florida)
I've had this movie on VHS since it came out in the 90's and both CDs (vol. 1 & 2) are ALWAYS in my car. I was so thrilled recently to be able to watch the DVD with my oldest kid who has grown up listening to the music in the car. It's still as funny, ironic, awe-inspiring (Andrew Strong's 16 yr old voice - Wow!) as the first time, and each time I've watched it. The Bonus Features showing "the making of", explaining the social and economical background (then and DVD release) in Ireland, "Where Are They Now", Music Videos, and more, make this edition a true gem to lovers of this film.
To the reviews criticizing the quality - did you watch the Bonus Feature that talked about "Organic" filming? It's very important and explains why the film came out the way it did - that and the fact that it's 20 years old. This part of the Bonus Features would be a great teaching tool to any film studies class.
Don't let the negative reviews sway you away from this DVD - it's got one of the best films ever made on it and it's packed full of great Bonus Features - definitely worth the money!

The Commitments
by Brian Bennoch
The music in this movie is great and worthy to be called great blues. The story is great and the actors are true to what Dubliners are like. If you have not seen it, rent it and I will be surprised if you do not get it for "your movie library" and also a cd as well !
The Commitments Summary
American Soul Music Serves As The Inspiration To Kids From A Dublin Ghetto. Alan Parker Directs This Film About A Rebel Soul Band. Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 11/14/2006 Starring: Robert Arkins Angeline Ball Run Time: 118 Minutes Rating: R Director: Alan Parker
An irresistible, comic drama from director Alan Parker (

), overflowing and alive with passion, humor, and music,
The Commitments
showcases some old R&B standards in a new light. A headstrong, fast-talking, ambitious young Dubliner (Robert Arkins) fancies himself a promoter of talent, and sets about assembling and packaging a local Irish R&B band. His group of self-absorbed, backbiting, but stunningly talented individuals begin to succeed beyond his wildest dreams, until petty jealousies and recrimination threaten to scuttle the whole deal. A moody, vivid, and soulful exploration of the Dublin club scene as well as a showcase for some wonderful unknown actors, the film (and its wonderful soundtrack) also features the actual band covering classic soul tunes from the likes of Otis Redding and Sam and Dave. It's that combination of soul and soul music that makes
The Commitments
a special little film.
