oldie but goodie
by Vonda L. Hanson (SEDROWOOLLEY, WA.)
I love the classic oldies and you cant beat Vincent Price for a smooth performance. The simplicity of the film that focuses on the motivations and not just the gore and carnage that todays movies are full of.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
by Robert Buchanan (Wisconsin)
In one of the very best of William Castle's popular B-horror offerings, the matchless Vincent Price stars as an obsessive pathologist who discovers the existence of a creature that lives in the human body, grows when its host experiences extreme terror and can only be diminished by the noise of a scream!
Despite its notoriously poor special effects (strings are quite visible!) and Castle's conventional direction, this kitsch classic is enlivened by compelling performances, a fantastic premise and another of Robb White's cunning, unpredictable plots, which he churned out for most of Castle's best pictures. Price is at the top of his form as the misguided scientist, and although his performance of an acid trip (the very first in film history) isn't even remotely realistic, his expressed panic certainly is.
Always keen to promote his movies with gimmickry as a supplement to his own craftsmanship, Castle had vibrating electric buzzers installed in the seats of random audience members, which were activated whenever a scream in the movie occurred. Paid shills were also planted in the audience to scream during key moments. Even the cinematography was touched by Castle's ambition: splashes of bloody red color in a crucial scene hideously complement the B&W photography.
While it's hardly as effective a horror movie as it was a half-century ago, "The Tingler" is still great fun, for both its hilarious flaws and legendary leading man make this required viewing for anyone who still cares about light, enjoyable genre pictures and magnetic screen acting. There might be some potential for a remake of this, but while the effects could certainly be improved on, who could possibly replace the Merchant of Menace?

Tingler Rocks!!!
by Aurelio Heredia (USA)
Vincent Price can sell. This is an outrageous movie, but Vincent is so convincing that it all seems so believable. Gorgeous picture for black and white DVD. And sound is not bad either.

I Liked 'Ollie' Best!
by Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA)
"Ollie" was my favorite person in this movie. What a strange dude! He was full of surprises, including reactions to things, comments he makes and, of course, deeds he commits.
Yeah, Vincent Price proves again what a fine actor we was, and is the star of the film, but I really enjoyed Philip Coolidge's (Ollie) performance. As for Price, watching this other day made me scratch my head and wonder how such a good actor could play in so many cheesy films?
Whatever, those two along with Patricia Cutts (the tramp wife), Judith Evelyn (Ollie's deaf-mute wife), Darryl Hickman and Pamela Lincoln all did a pretty nice job, although Price's acting talents stand out among the cast.
It also would have fun to see this in the theater 50 years ago when they rigged the seats to tingle during certain scenes! That really happened! Director William Castle really tried everything to get the audience. He even stopped the film and asked the audience to scream! It must have been hilarious. You have to give it to the man for his effort to promote his "horror" films.
The DVD looks good. This is a nice transfer, which is important with all the lights and shadows. You can see some alternate scenes, too, which are interesting.

Nifty classic 50's horror film.
by Tom Molnar (Carson City, NV United States)
My wife told me she saw this movie when she was in grammar school and it scared the crap out of her. I'd never even HEARD of it. So, one night after a couple adult beverages, we did a quick search on Google and found the movie here on Amazon. I ordered it immediately.
When it arrived, we popped some corn, poured some wine, and had a ball watching this hokey but fun movie. Of course, Vincent Price gives the movie some credibility, but you can sure tell that 'special effects' have come a long way since the 50's. William Castle was the director and he was known for many of the 'horror' films of that time. It was fun to watch.
The Tingler Summary
Vincent Price stars as an obsessed doctor who discovers that fear manifests itself as a parasitic creature which grows on the spinal cords of terrified people. If they scream the Tingler can be destroyed. If they don't it will sever the spinal column and kill them. He successfully isolates and removes the Tingler from a deaf mute (Judith Evelyn) who has been scared to death by her devious husband. Once captured the Tingler escapes and runs amok in a crowded movie theater. Terror is loose but can it be stopped? THE TINGLER is legendary horror director William Castle's magnum opus. After the success of The House on Haunted Hill Castle devised a new gimmick called "Percepto" for the Tingler. Participating theaters would wire seats so that random moviegoers would get a tangible electric shock during climactic moments in the film. Another novelty used to maximum effect is the short color sequence depicting blood pouring from a faucet and filling a bathtub. Castle went on to direct more cult classics like Homicidal and 13 Ghosts and gained some mainstream credibility by producing Rosemary's Baby.System Requirements:Running Time: 81 Min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR Rating: NR UPC: 043396077799 Manufacturer No: 07779
