America Patton from Kansas
by America Patton (Coffeyville, KS United States)
Rufus has a different sound than all of the other Jazz players and thaty`s what makes him so great. This is a funky and great ablum to buy. Rufus will soon be coming out with new ablums in the future with a new updated sound to his music. You will love it! Rufus is one of the greatest of all time. This is a five Star album.

Baby do it to me...............
by Malcolm J. Hamon
Bag pipes are terrible.............they just are. Agony bags, so nasty. Now here's a guy that I think is cool cos I think he's taking the pi**. I like it. Brian White.

Cheesy but Cool
by Phill (London)
This album is good. Rufus plays it funky again. If any other Rufus fans could let me know which album 'Nobody knows the troubles I have seen' is on ( possibly one of the best Jazz Funk tunes ever ) then post here...or send me it on mp3.

This man knows nothing about playing the bagpipes
by Crazypyper (PA)
This is a classic situation of someone who doesn't know how to play the bagpipes claiming that they do. Piping is a centuries old artform that takes years of study to play even at a novice level. Harley's bagpipes are painfully out of tune and he obviously has no knowledge of the cultural tradition that proper piping demands. I could just pick up a sax and blow it about jazz clubs and claim to "have my own style man." But I would still suck like a hoover. The reason that I am so unhappy about this album is because people who do not know better will think that bagpipes sound awful if this is their only exposure to them. I have played bagpipes since I was (...)and I have been making pipes for 4 years. Please, if you want to hear bagpipes look up "gordon duncan", "Victoria Police Pipe Band", or "Angus McColl", just to name a few.
The Pied Piper of Jazz Summary
Rufus Harley is unquestionably the greatest bagpipe player in jazz history. Given the competition, that may seem a rather dubious distinction, but one listen to
The Pied Piper of Jazz
will convince all but the most skeptical. Culled from a number of Atlantic recordings (circa 1966-67), these tunes prove that Harley's instrument is far more than a novelty. Combining a droning nasal sound, reminiscent of John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" soprano sax style, Harley coaxes the bagpipes to swing soulfully on "Feeling Good" and "Bagpipe Blues." His more conventional tenor sax is featured on "Pipin' the Blues" (along with guest Sonny Stitt), and his Roland Kirk-influenced flute sound is displayed on "More." In short, the idiosyncratic elements of Harley's bagpipes sound downright hip when he's on sax and flute, two obviously more pivotal jazz horns. What's ultimately fresh here is that mix of soulful, standard jazz methodology and something almost entirely new, even decades after Harley's pipes were caught on tape.
