The movie was very good and useful for the seminar I was leading about emotional healing.

A family favorite
by Alan Holyoak (In the shadow of the Tetons)
This is a film that appeals to both children and adults.
Bruce Willis steps out of his action adventure rut to play a self-centered, high-powered image consultant who believes he is having a nervous breakdown when his 8-year old younger self appears, literally on his doorstep. Together they explore their past and try to figure out what they have to do to set things right.
Willis and Spencer Breslin do a great job of playing the older and younger Russ, but Lily Tomlin, who plays Willis' unruffled secretary, is the hit of the show! Emily Mortimer turns in a strong performance as Willis' assistant/conscience, and Jean Smart fills the important role of the sounding board and wake-up call for Willis.
This film is filled with lots of favorite quotes in our family...e.g.,"Forty, that...is...old." "Holy smokes, 99 channels and there's nothing on." "I knew it! I grow up to be a guy that doesn't know ANYTHING!" "Chester...the world's greatest dog" and "Somebody better call the waaaaaaaaambulance."
Some people might say that this movie is too sappy, too "Disney", but I think it's a great tale and we enjoy watching it at least a few times a year...and that's saying something with kids at our house from 10-19 yrs of age.
If you haven't watched this show I recommend that you give it a shot.
5 stars for fun family entertainment!

Good Family Fun
by D. Hull (Yakima, WA USA)
A nice little break from reality. Lily Tomlin at her best. The kid and Bruce aren't so bad either.

Very Funny
by K. Reed
I really like this movie. Bruce Willis does a wonderful job as a real jerk who changes over the course of the movie, as he figures out what has made him the way he is buy reliving his childhood. Very funny.

Disney's The Kid Summary
Bruce Willis Stars As A Successful Power Broker Who Gets A Surprise Visit From Himself At Age 8. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 06/07/2005 Starring: Bruce Willis Spencer Breslin Run Time: 104 Minutes Rating: Pg Director: Jon Turteltaub
Russ Duritz (Bruce Willis) is an ultracynical, 40-year-old L.A. image consultant who fashions bogus façades for scumbag clients. Oblivious to his own need for a makeover, he's a tyrant in the office (to the chagrin of his sarcastic assistant, played to perfection by Lily Tomlin), and he's emotionally unavailable to the morally centered woman (Emily Mortimer) who senses goodness beneath Russ's hardened veneer. Not a moment too soon, a pudgy kid (Spencer Breslin) mysteriously appears in Russ's life, revealing himself to be Rusty Duritz--that is, Russ's 8-year-old self, arriving by some magic to put the adult Russ's life into beneficial perspective. This variation on
A Christmas Carol
has Rusty guiding Russ on a tour of his past to reveal how he became a loveless, hard-shelled loser. It takes a bit of smarmy chicken-soup psychology to explain it all, but
The Kid
is an otherwise charming and involving fantasy, suggesting that perhaps we'd all benefit from a bit of counseling by our younger selves. Written with admirable restraint by Audrey Wells (who brought a similar appeal to
The Truth About Cats and Dogs
) and directed by Jon Turteltaub (
Cool Runnings
), the movie doesn't force its supernatural elements or attempt to explain Rusty's existence. It's just a fable for our modern age and a reminder to embrace the better angels of our nature. Delivered with an easy blend of humor and sentiment, that message makes
The Kid
an unexpected pleasure. (Look closely for Matthew Perry as Willis's shaggy-haired client.)
