Zany fun
by Cathy in Utah (USA)
Don't expect linear storytelling or a documentary, per se. This film offers a little of both. There's a loose plot in which the Beatles, who have become prisoners of their fame, try to break free and have a bit of fun, much to their manager's vexation. (Each of the Beatles gets at least one delightful little scene in which to shine except, curiously, for Paul McCartney; his "mixer" of a grandfather, played memorably by Wilfrid Brambell, is his surrogate in mischief.) There's all kinds of droll merriment along the way, with some of the Beatles' hits incorporated cleverly, but the real payoff is an extended concert scene at the end. Just a note -- some of the accents, most notably George Harrison's, can be challenging; try watching with the subtitles on.

Love the movie but this DVD stops in the middle!
by Douglas Fay
A Hard Day's Night is my all time favorite movie, but when I tried to watch it on my DVD player that usually plays the complete disk it stopped in the middle of the movie right out of the box! This is disappointing. Haven't had a chance to try it on another DVD player. Maybe next time I'll bite the bullet and buy the Apple version.

A HARD DAYS NIGHT
by Jeff Linn (Columbus, ohio, USA)
This DVD is the best reproduction of the movie experience i have seen. The picture quality is excellent, the dialog is clear. Honestly my memory of the sound of the tunes isn't all that great from the original when I saw it in the theaters. The excitement of seeing this movie at the theater was such that any sound at all would have been acceptable. The sound of the tunes on the DVD version is all there, though I would have preferred real stereo or 5.1 surround. The only tune that seems to have that is in the "live performance" scene where you hear the girls screaming in the rear channels. This will have to do until they remix the entire movie...which i am sure they will. It is now in the wide screen format with some chop off at the top and bottom...but who cares? It wasn't obvious enough to make me aware of it, and frankly I like everything in widescreen anyway. This DVD took me back to that time in the sixties...and thats what i was looking for. Well done.

Grows on You
by WheelerQ
When I first tried to watch this movie, I quit halfway because I thought it was ridiculous and dumb. However, my 2nd and subsequent viewings of this irreverent film revealed it to be funny and enjoyable and even a singalong. I found the fans' selfish idolatry disturbing though. The film is quite clean with a few innuendos and one woman showing excessive cleavage.
A Hard Day's Night Summary
Ground-zero For The Look Of Music Video, This Classic Film Is Now Re-issued With A Digitally Enhanced 5.1 Soundtrack, Enhanced Picture, And Includes Bonus Material With Newly Discovered Footage. This Two-disc Set Is The Definitive Archive Of Beatlemania.
The Fab Four from Liverpool--John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr--in their first movie. Nobody expected
A Hard Day's Night
to be much more than a quick exploitation of a passing musical fad, but when the film opened it immediately seduced the world--even the stuffiest critics fell over themselves in praise (highbrow Dwight Macdonald called it "not only a gay, spontaneous, inventive comedy but it is also as good cinema as I have seen for a long time"). Wisely, screenwriter Alun Owen based his script on the Beatles' actual celebrity at the time, catching them in the delirious early rush of Beatlemania: eluding rampaging fans, killing time on trains and in hotels, appearing on a TV broadcast. American director Richard Lester, influenced by the freestyle French New Wave and British
Goon Show
humor, whips up a delightfully upbeat circus of perpetual motion. From the opening scene of the mop tops rushing through a train station mobbed by fans, the movie rarely stops for air. Some of the songs are straightforwardly presented, but others ("Can't Buy Me Love," set to the foursome gamboling around an empty field) soar with ingenuity. Above all, the Beatles express their irresistible personalities: droll, deadpan, infectiously cheeky. Better examples of pure cinematic joy are few and far between.
