Goonies
by Lynn Reeves (Branford, Florida)
I love this movie. Watched it the first time when it first came out with my children years ago. Now I can watch it with my grandkids and it's just as much fun. It never gets old. One of my faves.

Nice Blu-Ray Transfer
by Randal A. Donnelly (Hollister, CA USA)
I'm not sure why there are those that rated the Warner UK Blu-Ray release so low due to picture quality but I found it to be a step above and beyond the DVD release. I experienced no graininess or flickering in dark areas of the film on my 42" Panasonic Plasma. On the contrary, the quality of the picture was outstanding. There were no artifacts, dust or debris and the picture was clean and sharp. The audio, Dolby True HD 5.1, was another huge improvement. The dialoge was clear and the effects were a pleasure to hear from my rear speakers. All-in-all a pleasurable experience. I've always loved this film and this Blu-Ray release makes my favorite film even more enjoyable.

The Goonies (1985)-Loved it in 1985 and so did my kids!
by Keith Mirenberg (www.spaceanimations.org)
The Goonies (1985) was a five star film experience for me and my two young boys back in 1985 when we first saw it in the theater. Now that over 20 years have gone by and my boys are grown, I occasionally watch it on DVD and in retrospect, I am a little surprised at some of the lines. I know this film is a cult movie and it probably deserves it, but really didn't see the need for some of the language, like "Oh Sh-t" from Chunk, and so on.
My kids really enjoyed this film and wound up being "influenced" by the flick in a few ways. My wife and I bought a pirates map on fake parchment for them which we had framed and placed in their room which we called a Goonies Map. For a period, my younger boy was interested in pirates, pirate ships and coins, and the family even wound up staying at Pirates Cove (a hotel which featured a full size pirates ship) on a trip indirectly because of this darn film.
That being said, when I screen this old movie with subtitles on I am surprised at some of the things the Goonies say in the course of the entertaining racket. Just an observation, that's all. All in all, a great film and I would still vote it five full stars.

I may age with time, but not this movie
by Jennifer
The Goonies is one of those special films that no matter how old you get, it never loses its magic and wonder. I remember seeing The Goonies back in 1987, when I was a young kid, and gosh, it was probably the most entertaining and fun movie I've ever seen in my few years of living.
Now that I've grown up, I'd thought I'd watch the film again to see if that magic and excitment of a great and humorous adventure movie would still be there. Surely it was, to an even greater extent than when I was a kid. Though Sean Austin and Josh Brolin have all grown up now, I still think their best movie is "The Goonies." And the Cindy Laupier song is more catchier than ever. Even the long video is awesome!

The Greatest Movie of All Time
by The Tao of Netflix (Washington, DC)
Not sure the point of reviewing the Goonies; its like critically evaluating the architectural design of the Biltmore Estate. As a modern day classic, it stands on its own as the de facto standard for adventure. Die hard fans will note the scene similarity with Twilight - the surfing/beach (the "Push"?) scene.

The Goonies Summary
They Call Themselves The Goonies. The Secret Caves. The Old Lighthouse. The Lost Map. The Treacherous Traps. The Hidden Treasure. And Sloth.. Join The Adventure. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 05/02/2006 Starring: Sean Astin John Matuszak Run Time: 90 Minutes Rating: Pg Director: Richard Donner
You may be surprised to discover that the director of the
Lethal Weapon
movies and scary horror flick
The Omen
, Richard Donner, also produced and directed this classic children's adventure (which, by the way, was written by Donner's screen-wizard friend Steven Spielberg). Then again you may not.
The Goonies
, like Donner's other movies, is the same story of good versus evil. It has its share of bad guys (the Fratelli brothers and their villainous mother), reluctant-hero good guys (the Walsh bothers and their gang of friends), and lots of corny one-liners. Like in an old-fashioned Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew plot, the Goonies need to solve a problem: a corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighborhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin (
Rudy
,
Encino Man
) and Martha Plimpton (
Pecker
,
200 Cigarettes
).
