Very good historical musical.
I really like anything about the revolutionary war and the founding fathers. This film is no different. I liked the songs and I liked the look. The singing was good and it was interesting to watch through the speaking parts. It actually ha...

I Say Vote Yes
Perverse in tone, though not of tongue, this moving and hilarious musical comedy is one for the history books. John Adams, played expertly by Mr. Feeney (William Daniels), goes around in his obnoxious and disliked state in order to rally ...

Very Disappointed
by Dayspring (Tennessee)
I purchased this DVD some time ago, but decided that it would be appropriate to watch on Constitution Day. I was stunned at the ongoing cursing and taking the Lord's name in vain, especially for a movie 37 years old. I took it out and put it in the trash.

humorously interesting
by Kane Lipe (Mt Vernon, IL. United States)
Considering that it was made in 1972, probably on a limited budget, it is a very interesting and educational look at what the founding fathers went to in order to achieve our independence. If you can overlook the at times corny bits, (I never thought I'd see Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin dancing down a staircase together) It was well worth the money, and a good watch for anyone interested in American History.

Outstanding quality
by Joan A. Kennedy
I can't say enough about how good the quality of the DVD is. The clarity is outstanding, the sound quality is great! I enjoyed every moment of watching it.

Musical History
by Roger A. Volk (Fredonia, New York United States)
Taken from the broadway play, with a marvelous cast, I love either seeing this on television or watching it around the 4th of July. A good history lesson and good tunes.

Happy Fourth of July!
by Gale Johansen (Chicago, Illinois, USA)
Viewing this movie is a traditional part of our Fourth of July celebration and it is so nice to have it in our library and not have to look for it at the video store.
1776 (Restored Director's Cut) Summary
The hit Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards became the basis for this 1972 film about America's first congress and the nation's declaration of independence from Britain. Most of the original cast members are aboard, including William Daniels as John Adams. The film is a little stodgy and moves stiffly from scene to scene--the adaptation to the screen is not a smooth success. But it is nonetheless captivating, considering that so few films have dealt directly with America's birth. Directed by Peter H. Hunt.
