I bought this movie to replace a school library's copy that got lost. When I got a notice from the librarian to return the movie or pay $25, I sent for this VHS that cost practically just the shipping fee. OFF THE HOOK!! I teach special ed. and my students tend to take things home that they think they should have for their own.

Back when this was released on VHS, I always had the time to watch this film. Although I found some scenes that didn't involve the Orca a bit too tedious, now I find them all important for the overall meaning of Free Willy. This is a film about freedom, animal rights, and family. I may not believe everything about animal rights, but I still find this family film very touching. A few scenes still tend to drag a bit, and some of the dialogue is pretty cheesy, but those are just minor problems. This a great family film, and it shouldn't be overshadowed by most family films of today.

4/5 Heartwarming family flick abut a troubled boy and an orca whale

Here is a wonderful movie the entire family will love. A gang of whalers capture a valuable 12-year-old male orca whale (Keiko) for a marine exhibit and call him Willy. A homeless boy named Jessie (Jason James Richter) and his friends were snatching food from other people, but when the police hunt them down, Jessie and one of his friends hide in an aquarium and spray paint on the premesis. When the police catch up, they gave him a chance to make up for the grafiti incident by cleaning up the mess. They also gave him a foster home. During then, he befriends Randolph (August Shellenberg) and Willy. When greedy workers tried to kill Willy for the life insurance claim for $1,000,000, the group plan to release Willy into the wild. This was later followed by two sequels, with the second film probably being my favorite, but I am not so sure about the third. I would recommend this film franchise to anyone. You will enjoy it.

Well, I can finally say I saw 'Free Willy'! Family friendly film with a simple story. It's easy to watch and it will keep the kids happy. I bought the triple feature with all 3 films for under $10.00, it's hard to go wrong for that price! The DVD set has very good transfers for all 3 films.
