wide array of commercials
by Mr. Ben (mid-michigan)
This two disc set is worth it for those interested in old advertising, jingles, popular culture and nostalgia. The quality is lacking, of course, some of the animated adverts especially suffer as you can't see the product or labels. But I have a decent set of eyes, and this is acceptable when you take into account that these are ads that weren't expected to be around even a year after they were produced.
Ideally I would like a set like this to give a little background on some of these ads, as you hear a lot of the same narrators (or similar sounding). Obviously, due to the relative low production value of the the set, there are relatively few (or none) of the "big" companies like Coca-cola, Kellog cereals, beer companies (you get a few Hamm's and Black Label ads but only one Budweiser ad, for example). But still, this set has a great array of ads. And this is definitely going to be rewatched.

All it takes is a little effort
by Sheri Galloway
These DVD's seem to be a real bargain. However I gave them as a gift at Christmas and was very embarrassed. My brother has many of the commercials on VHS and the quality is far better. Why are they selling such bad quality when it is obvious there are better masters out there. There are many complaints about the sound and with good reason. With just a little effort the sound could be improved. And I am astounded at the number of commercials that are totally out of sync. That is a very easy fix. This set is cheap... in more than one way.

And now, a word from our sponsor...
by P. Lanier (Chicago IL)
Simply put, this package offers the most bang for the buck. Yes, many have stated the picture and sound quality is not great at times, but I dare you to find more content for the price! Lets hope the folks at Madacy release another volume of Classic Commercials for us to enjoy!

Classic Telebumf

Interesting historical DVD - although the actual quality varies.
Worth watching as a trip down memory lane.

Hey, It's Not Expensive...
by John P Bernat (Kingsport, TN USA)
Well, let's see:
1. The film-to-DVD picture quality is awful. The worst are the late-60s color commercials which are so bad they're not even psychedelic.
2. The selections are pretty arbitrary. While the producers tried to "bucket" them, the categories do not easily allow searching for what you want.
3. The sound is uneven. While poor sound transfers from kinescopes are expectable, it appears that no effort was made to even out or normalize the sound, or to eliminate constant and steady background noise (there are technologies avaiable for this, ya know, since the 1970s).
So is it insane to give this collection 5 stars? Perhaps...here's why:
1. Watching the cigarette ads alone is absolutely priceless. What we did to sell tobacco! Shameless product assertions about "easy on your throat," for example. Just unbelievable.
2. The celebrity testimonials - John Wayne on cancer, for example, since at that moment he'd figured he beat cancer. You cannot get entertainment like that...
3. The use of stop action and claymation is incredible. Check out the early 50s commercials, for example.
4. The bloopers. There is an ad for a frostless refrigerator with an automatic door opener. The actress cannot get the door to work, so the camera dollies right up to her face (casting a giant shadow), there's some off-screen noise and movement, and then we dolly back with the door open!
5. Finally, the price. Value equals quality minus cost. You cannot get repeatable entertainment like this at this price...
