excellent customer service, mediocre movie
by V. Jackson (Atlanta, GA)
movie arrived in perfect condition, very quickly. Needed the movie for a class I was taking, would not have normally watched it, but enjoyed it a bit.

The 1st Movie Of Any Kind...
by Serious Reviewer (USA)
That I really ever got into and loved. I have watched this dvd at least 25 times and it touched me everytime. It is achingly beautiful so that it almost hurts to view. It doesn't seem as if anything like this could ever happen in real life. In real life the character of Mina (as played by Sarita Choudhury) probably would have gone for the money and prestige of being married to the suave and priviledged Harry Patel.
This is a compelling and interesting story as well. The romance between Mina and Demetrius (Denzel Washington) is surrounded by a statement of the racism and hypocrisy that exist's in our culture. Perhpas a bit different nearly 20 years later as this film was made in 1990, it still relates in some ways today. I've always felt this was more a movie about the character of Mina than it is about Demitrius. Though Demetrius is prevalent through out much of the film.
Before Mississippi Masala came along, I had never loved a movie as much. Never had the motivation to own a movie, I know that sounds strange. Since then I have expanded my collection with Serpico and On The Waterfront and A Beautiful Mind. But I guess I'm just a person that has to find a really special movie to buy. I'm not as frugal with my purchasing of dvds as I am with music and books.
Anyway, I would highly recommend to anyone out there who is either a fan of Denzel Washington or anyone who just loves a great movie and a great story, a love story.

Hot Indian spices
by Alexandra Mena (New York, NY)
I ordered the film for the purpose of completing a graduate class requirement. I was very pleased that Amazon had it in stock, and ordered it the same day I learned of my assignment. I was uncertain as to what condition the film would be in, since the price was so affordable - $5.99-but was pleased to discover that it was in mint condition. Amazon will be the site I turn to for all of my course needs. Thanks Amazon.

Wow - the things that divide us as humans!
by Joyce Ekong (Riverside, California United States)
Wonderful story-line beautifully acted out by the two main characters Denzel Washington's Demetrius and Sarita Chodury's Mina. Prejudice has no color.
Mississippi Masala Summary
Movie Dvd
Mira Nair, the Indian director, scored an international art-house hit with her feature debut,
Salaam Bombay!
, a tale of life in the streets of seething urban India. Her next film was a surprising turnabout:
Mississippi Masala
is a cultural study and a love story set in the rural American south. The love story comes courtesy of Denzel Washington, as a rug cleaner, and Sarita Choudhury (from Nair's
Kama Sutra
), as the daughter of Indian immigrants running a small-time motel; both give fresh, charming performances. But Nair is equally interested in capturing the feelings of an exile's life, and Roshan Seth, the fine actor who played Nehru in
Gandhi
, superbly catches the hope and sorrow of dislocation. Although the issues are serious, Nair maintains a breezy, naturalistic approach, and the various ingredients of this masala blend into a rich, flavorful stew.
