Julieta's crossover to pop is a success
by Andres C. Salama (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Mexican singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas somewhat of a breakthrough album, as she left behind her previous punk/rock sound to a more pop style. The change apppears upfront in the album's kitschy cover, showing Julieta as a traditional bride dressed in white against a pink background. Predictably, some people have accused Julieta of selling out, but there are many great songs here: Lento (great video as well), the mexican folk-inspired Andar conmigo, Algo esta Cambiando, Oleada and others. This was her first work produced by Coti Sorokin and Cachorro Lopez, and the results are better (at least in my opinion) than the previous productions by Gustavo Santaolalla. She would make another album with Sorokin and Lopez, Limon y Sal, which I think is even better than Si, but this album is very much worthwhile listening to.

Si te gusta SI, te encantara Limon y sal/If you like SI, you'll love Limon y Sal
by B. Lockhart (Davis, CA USA)
Or maybe vice versa. I'd give them both 5 stars y mas. Both CDs are bright, vibrant, and full of Julieta in LOVE with LIFE. Se nota de repente. I just discovered her through "Limon y sal" when it was released earlier this year, and slowly became captivated. One of millions...I know. I'm a latecomer, but a very content one. She has that mysterious inner "algo" that just connects naturally with that same mystic "algo" inside each of us, her "captivados". It's not exactly "duende", but it's damn close. It's captivating nonetheless. Talent, "duende" y belleza. It's a delicious triple threat.
I've enjoyed discovering her catalog going backwards in time. I fell in love both thru her music and video work (thank God for youtube & KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectico). I think, like a fellow reviewer, it happened at the exact moment while watching the video of "Lento". She's probably garnered thousands of suitors "pediendole la mano" on the strength of that song, and of course, "Andar conmigo" alone. I also enjoy her first two alternative flavored works even if she sounds the role of the disgruntled lover a lot. Knowing her, at the time, she was probably just channeling that phase of life. It's all fine stuff.
I cut my teeth on the music of Lennon & McCartney, George Harrison, Neil Young, Prince, and great female artists from Sam Phillips back to Joni Mitchell. Add to that Spanish stuff like Mecano, Pata Negra, Kiko Veneno, Camaron de la Isla, and more recently, Estrella Morente...to name a few. Julieta joins fine company.
As they say in Spain, "la tia es cojonudo...y su musica tambien...". I was lucky enough to spend four years teaching there back in the late "la movida" era of early Almodovar, 1985-1989, en el foro, Madrid. In fact, I think she's touring there now. I hope she meets Kiko Veneno and Estrella Morente, two artists who she's mentioned she admires, and gets a chance to collaborate. Que camino mas bueno seria con esa mezcla de artistas....
By the way, if you have a 5.1 setup, buy the dual disc of "Limon y sal". Tastefully done (I just wrote my first review of her for that disc) and the 5.1 sweet spot won't ever get much sweeter. You also get the DVD versions of her video work, "Me Voy" and an MTV "making of" video that's enjoyable and gives a good glimpse of her and her Buenos Aires (no digo boludeces...) work in the studio...Pa' saborear, todo.
Finally, I hope she makes her way back to CA, Sur y Norte, so I get a chance to see her in concert. She deserves to make it here in "Gringolandia" too.

Julieta Venegas - 'Si'!
by Gary Moore
Taste is personal & musical opinions vary...quite subjective of course. While there's much I don't prefer, there is no bad music per se, only preference; as such some embrace Julieta Venegas musical journey while others do not (que sera sera).
I love the music of Julieta Venegas 'Si'; her new release 'Limon Y Sal' I like even more. 'Bueninvento' & 'Aqui' did not catch my fancy but again that's subjective...only the foppish denigrate an artist/their evolution via ascribed ulterior motives - perhaps more likely a case of an egotistic critic needing more fiber in their diet.
'Si' contains 10 songs that caress the ear, soothe the soul & uplift the spirit:
1. Lento
2. Andar Conmigo
3. Algo Está Cambiando
4. Tu Lado
5. Que Pidas
6. Mala Memoria
7. Nada Serio
8. Donde Quiero Estar
9. Alguien
10. Oleada
'Lento' is my favorite but the entire CD is truly great. The only downer is the listener is left wanting for more. Not a problem: her latest CD 'Limon Y Sal' is now also available.
Enjoy.

Love this CD!!
by Z. Holly (Chicago, Illinois United States)
My 2 year old daughter and I were first introduced to Julieta Venegas' CD "Si' from watching videos on PepsiMusica on the weekends. My daughter loved the video for "Lento" and I got hooked on the song. After seeing the video for "Andar Conmigo", I decided to go ahead and purchase the CD. I love the CD!! My favorite track is "Algo Esta Cambiando". I haven't had the opportunity to check out Julieta's previous work, but I love 'Si'!!
Sí Summary
It's a bit jarring to see Mexican alt-rockera Julieta Venegas posed demurely in a wedding dress, against a pink background, on the cover of
Si
. Inside, the 10-track disc reflects the sugary switch, offering sweet pop arrangements and wide-eyed musings on love. Venegas' last two albums,
Aqui
and
Bueninvento
, were moodier, more introspective affairs. Savvy marketing move? Maybe, but it's given Venegas the most successful, most accessible album of her career thus far.
Si
is an irresistible valentine of an album, anchored by Venegas' heartfelt vocal delivery and quirky musical choices, from pop and disco to reggae and hip-hop. Songs like "Lento, Andar Conmigo and Algo Esta Cambiando" sparkle especially brightly. Venegas may still be searching for a defining sound, but listening to her take the journey on
Si
is sure to put a smile on a listener's face.
