Mel Gibson's version of Hamlet, the Movie
by Murthy Kolipakam (Long Branch, NJ)
Saw the movie before seeing the play on Broadway with Jude Law. If I had not seen the movie, it would have been very difficult to watch the play and understand what was going on. Mel did a great job in playing Hamlet. The whole cast was excellent. I highly recommend this movie, if you are a Shakespeare fan.

Hamlet - Excellent movie!
by Goku (Bedrock)
Hello I'm an autistic adult.
This is my review on Hamlet - dvd.
I rented this from my local library & have watched it on tv on the regular channel's a couple of times & really enjoy the movie. Mel Gibson is great as Hamlet in the movie. Excellent actor. I can't praise up the movie enough. If you get into Shakespeare then watch this movie. You'll really enjoy it I know I have.
Happy Movie Hunting!

Excellent product
by Mariann Villafane (Puerto Rico)
Is an excellent film, specially for the students that are learning about William Shakespeare famous plays, what a better way to do so .

Worth having
by John Hayden (Mason, MI United States)
The screenplay takes great liberties with the script--some radical abbreviations--but overall, it was aesthetically delightful.

Dreadful
by Tim
This film has many problems, bad cuts, miscasting, etc. - but I'll limit myself to Mel Gibson here. This is the most ridiculous Hamlet I've ever seen. Mel plays him with swaggering machismo (the only thing he is capable of) and it is wrong, wrong, wrong. Hamlet is a passive-aggressive type; he is indirect in everything he does. Laurence Olivier's is a good example as to how he should be played. Gibson's doesn't even make any sense.
And as far as the cuts, they're particularly bad here, but everyone does it. Olivier cuts quite a bit out of it himself. Brannagh's is the only film version I know of with no cuts at all and unfortunately I feel it is as wrong as this one.
Hamlet Summary
Hamlet, Prince Of Denmark, Finds Out That His Uncle Claudius Killed His Father To Obtain The Throne, And Plans Revenge.
Franco Zeffirelli's stripped-down, two-hour version of Shakespeare's play stars Mel Gibson as a rather robust version of the ambivalent Danish prince. Gibson is much better in the part than many critics have admitted, his powers of clarity doing much to make this particular
Hamlet
more accessible than several other filmed versions. The supporting cast is outstanding, including Glenn Close as Gertrude, Alan Bates as Claudius, Ian Holm as Polonius, and Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia. Zeffirelli's vigorous direction employs a lively camera style that nicely alters the viewer's preconceptions about the way
Hamlet
should look.
