Greyfriars Bobby
by F. Ball
A story about a dog faithful to its owner and winning the heart of the town it is in. It is a Great for the whole family, though a little slower than newer movies, never the less a movie that is worth watching.

DISNEY DOES DOGS AND SCOTLAND PROUD-TRUE STORY OF DEVOTION AND LOVE FROM MAN'S BEST FRIEND
by Harold Wolf (Wells, IN United States)
A fun, heartwarming story of a small Skye Terrior who spent his remaining life resting and guarding his master's grave. The tale is true and from the events that are recorded from the mid 1800s in Edinburgh, Scotland. You will be richly blessed by seeing this dramatic tale of one dog, and how he came to be loved by an entire town, for decades and decades.
Disney has taken the account of Bobby, the dog to become known as "Greyfriars Bobby", from the book by the same name written by Eleanor Atkinson, an Indiana author for youth. The DVD Disney film stick closely to the author's account which is known to be a bit of an embellishment to the actual account, making it a bit more dramatic for children. It is a superb story, and a beautiful and exciting film created in the always high quality of any Disney production. This is a true FAMILY FILM, appreciated by all ages--4 to 104 years.
Sets are typical Disney delights, historically accurate, beautifully presented, and worthy of the "CLASSIC" labeling from all aspects of the production.
Let yourself slip back into the 1850's and 1860's of old Edinburgh and experience Greyfriars Bobby and his story firsthand.
Also, pick up the book, Greyfriars Bobby, by Eleanor Atkinson, and gift it to a dog lover or a child. See my 5-star review under books.

Wonderful

This is a wonderful family film. I saw the Bobby statue when I was in Edinburgh in 1994. Heartwarming story!

Buried in the depths of my past-I was just there.
by Paul K. Mckneely
I have three Scotish surnames in my ancestry. So I could not pass up a tour to see the British Isles this past summer with our church choir. The trip finale was to sing in the magnificent St. Giles Cathedral just a block or so down from Greyfriar's courtyard and Abbey. The impressive Scotish National Museum is just across the street. A statue errected to Bobbie is in the fork in the street just in front of two businesses named for the beloved animal. Inside the wrought iron gates is Bobbie's grave site and a walk down to the right is John Grey's grave stone paid for by "the American friends of Greyfriar's Bobbie". It is coming close to half a century ago when I saw the disney movie. I have to admit that it was the most touching experience for me there in downtown Edinburgh. What a powerful movie for such feelings to well up inside of me so many years (decades) later! I took some high definition video along the sidewalk in front of the address. I will try to post it as a video review if I can get it stepped down to a lower resolution.

WARNING ABOUT THE DVD VERSION OF GREYFRIARS BOBBY
by Jennifer J. Adeney (Richmond South, Victoria Australia)
Walt Disney's 1961 classic Greyfriars Bobby is one of the most heartwarming and enchanting classic ever to be brought to the screen. Therefore, you can imagine my astonishment when I purchased the DVD only to find out that the entire narration by the star, Donald Crisp, is completely missing from the print. I come from a cinema industry background and remember the film vividly on its original and subsequent re-releases, and when it became available on VHS tape I immediatey purchased it and have enjoyed it again, many times over, complete with the narration on the VHS version. The narration by Donald Crisp is meant to start about 9 minutes into the film, as he becomes both narrator and the voice of the dog. One of the most important parts of the narration, and the story, is what happens to the dog after the events, which was originally all explained in the theatrical and VHS versions, but is completely missing on the DVD version, and therefore an important part of the emotional thread is also missing. I recommend that you watch the complete VHS version and totally avoid the incomplete DVD copy. Walt Disney would be disgusted at the way they have treated one of his most cherished classics.
Greyfriars Bobby Summary
Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 01/11/2008
Released in 1961--the same year as
The Absent-Minded Professor
and
The Parent Trap
--
Greyfriars Bobby
epitomizes the heart-on-its-sleeve sentimentality that was the special preserve of the Disney Studio. Based on a true story, the film follows the adventures of a wee Skye terrier who refuses to be separated from his master, even in death. Bobby sleeps on the old man's grave in the cemetery of Greyfriars church; he won't be driven away by Mr. Brown, the groundskeeper (Donald Crisp), or adopted by Mr. Trail (Laurence Naismith), the kindly restaurant owner. Bobby wins over both men, as well as the children in the neighborhood tenements. When a priggish policeman charges Mr. Trail with harboring an unlicensed stray, the case becomes a tempest in a dog dish.
Greyfriars Bobby
offers handsome vistas of Edinburgh; however, even at 91 minutes the pace is meandering. Crisp and Naismith offer engaging performances as the reluctant friends (and rivals for Bobby's affection), but everyone speaks with such thick Scottish burrs it's like attending Groundskeeper Willie's family reunion. Suitable for all ages.
