Anything involving the war fails.
Too long for sure and only mildly interesting. The film really is just a romance and should probably been only that because the war stuff does not really work at all. You never really get an idea of any of it. You only get little pieces an...

no matter what people says about this movie, i liked it. ralph finnes was acting brilliant. all romance scenes are definetely touching. Maybe Minghella is not so important but this movie is so pure and deserve to watch.

The English Patient Quick Review
Epic, is an easy way to put it. It is a very enjoyable movie that can best be watched over 2 days. It has problems with pacing and length, but the concept, direction and action all really make you feel for the charactors.

Ralph Fiennes should have won the Oscar for his performance. Heartbreaking. An incredible film. Superb score by Gabriel Yared.

Great movie, not so great DVD
by sarah zen (Texas)
I love this movie and all the extras. However the quality of the DVD wasn't so great. It's like a copy of a copy, there are lines and dots that show up throughout the movie that are a little distracting. I'm disappointed with that.

Outstanding
by Frank Rizzo (Dallas, TX)
There is no weak link in this film. For my money, Scott Thomas and Fiennes give two of the most powerful performances in motion picture history. Every gesture, every word of every exchange, feels perfect and more importantly, natural. It's amazing chemistry coupled with amazing talent. The other performances are just as strong. The score is brilliant, as is the directing, and cinematography. I often complain about films not living up to Oscar hype. This film lives up to the hype.

From someone who adores the book..
by Dallas Fawson (Salt Lake City, Utah)
The movie really isn't that bad. It surprises me how many people have ripped the movie about, because it's honestly well made. It follows the plot of the book pretty closely but at the same time is very very different: It's poetic, but in a different way the book was.
The acting in the movie is excellent, and the flashbacks going from past to present blend together very well. If you haven't seen it, you should. If you've read the book and are afraid, like I was, hopefully this will help you. It's really not too bad.
*For those who've read the book (don't read if you haven't)*
Some things I found interesting that were different in the movie than the book were some of the twists: where you don't find out until towards the end of the book the true identity of the English Patient, you find out relatively fast in the movie. And while you know on the second page of the book the English patient's going to die, you don't know until the very end of the movie. And much as I hate to admit it, I liked Kip's exit in the movie better than in the book. I thought the reason he left in the book was sort of irrational and didn't seem like him. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

3 stars out of 4
by One-Line Film Reviews (Easton, MD)
The Bottom Line:
A weighty, somewhat self-important adaptation of an acclaimed novel, The English Patient (along with other movies that fit that description, like Sophie's Choice and Cold Mountain) was pure Oscar bait but it's also a suitably epic romance that will no doubt appeal to those who like this sort of thing.
The English Patient (Miramax Collector's Edition) Summary
Movie Dvd
Winner of nine Academy Awards and almost every critic's heart,
The English Patient
(based on Michael Ondaatje's prizewinning novel of love and loss during World War II) is one of the most acclaimed films of modern times. Hana, a nurse (Juliette Binoche), tends to an archaeologist (Ralph Fiennes) who has been burnt to a crisp in a plane crash. As their relationship intensifies, he flashes back to his overwhelming passion for a married woman (Kristin Scott Thomas). Meanwhile, Hana begins a new romance with a man who defuses bombs (Naveen Andrews) and Willem Dafoe almost steals the show as the thumbless thief Caravaggio. The intricately layered flashback narrative, sounding the depths of the lovers' hearts, improves with repeated viewings--especially with the sharp picture and digital sound of the digital video disc.
