Not Funny
by Jason W. Murphy (APO, AE United States)
This movie was not funny at all. Save your money and time and do not see this piece of crap. The best part of this movie is the end credits.

BAD SANTA IS GOOD
by Thomas M. Fallstich (Allentown, PA)
...A drunken Santa and his angry midget sidekick with a shopaholic wife pulling off Christmas time burglaries...How the f@#$ could it miss!!! Only a serious prude would not find at least parts of this film funny. Looks and sounds great in high definition.

Huh????
by Tom C. (New York City, USA)
This movie was probably looked better on paper than a movie. How it got green lit, I have no idea. The only redeeming value is the faith that Arthur has in Billy Bob Thornton and how he softens him. As for the jokes, there are some laughs, but most of them fall flat and have been seen a hundred times over in other movies(yawn). The comedy moments aren't clever and very predictable. I love black comedies since I was a teen, this one doesn't cut it. It was too oppresive. Tom C.

Crude but funny
by One-Line Film Reviews (Easton, MD)
The Bottom Line:
If you go into Bad Santa expecting well-written and acted low-brow humor, you'll likely be pleased by this very black comedy about unsympathetic but very amusing characters; it isn't warm and fuzzy, but it's all the better for it.

Ho...Ho... Screw it...get me a beer.
by M. B Cole (Las Vegas, NV)
Willie (Billy Bob) and Marcus (Tony Cox) work at shopping malls during Christmas time as Santa and his elf. But unlike your regular Santa and elf, this duo is here to rob the mall blind. After another successful heist, the duo split once again until the next Christmas. Willie claims though this past heist is his last heist and that he is going to change his life around. But Marcus knows the truth. Willie is a screw up and an alcoholic who only cares about money, liquor, women, and self-loathing. And as the next Christmas comes about, Marcus is proven right once again. Though during their preparations for their new heist, Willie comes across a couple people who might actually help him change the way he is. Hopefully it isn't too late.
The first time I saw this, I was literally shocked at how funny this was. Dark funny though. Sure it has Billy Bob in it, but I was not expecting it to be as vulgar and raunchy as it is. Which I absolutely loved. Billy Bob plays the perfect disgusting `doesn't give a crap' drunk. I'm sure the man has plenty of experience being drunk, but sometimes it's so realistic looking that you think he might've gotten drunk for some of the scenes. It's almost hard to explain how great he played his character. You can really tell Willie hates his life and really just doesn't care about anything. When you are at work, and you just piss yourself cause you just don't want to get up, you know you've hit rock bottom. Especially if you work is being Santa. And his interactions with the children in this movie are gut bustingly funny. I'm sure some parents wouldn't like it, but hey, if a kid sat on my lap and then sneezed a ton of chocolate in my face, I would freak out on him also.
Now the whole movie isn't about Willie being a dirt bag though. Even though that does cover a lot. There is a nice story that is going on between Willie and a very weird child that he meets during his Santa moment. The child lives with his grandmother who is basically brain dead unless its time to make sandwiches. So Willie decides to rob the kid's place, until he gets there and discovers that it's a sweet place to stay while they prepare for the heist. Now while the movie is mainly dark at heart, it's this part that we can see the light beginning to flutter awake. While Willie is mainly mean and uncaring to the kid at first, he begins to try and help the kid out from being so weird, but in Willie's way which is usually not the way you teach kids to do things. And then later the kid gives Willie a present, which was very funny, but also really touching. And you can tell in Willies eyes it's the first time in a long time something has made him feel again.
Sadly though I think Bernie Mac and John Ritter weren't that good in this movie. They are very funny guys, but I don't know, their roles just didn't seem right for them. That's just my opinion of course, because it seems like a lot of people like their characters. Everyone else was great though. Lauren Graham is so yummy.
If you're ready for some hilarious crude humor, then light up a cinnamon or pine candle, break out some alcoholic eggnog, and pop in Bad(der) Santa. Just make sure the kiddies aren't around for this one.
P.S. - Every Christmas I gather all my Christmas movies and try to watch as many as I can. My top 5 are (in no particular order) "Home Alone", "Home Alone 2", "Christmas Vacation", "Bad(der) Santa", and "Family Man".
Badder Santa (Unrated Widescreen Edition) Summary
Movie Dvd
Instantly qualifying as a perennial cult favorite,
Bad Santa
is as nasty as it wants to be, and there's something to be said for comedy without compromise. The Coen brothers conceived the basic idea and served as executive producers, but it's director Terry Zwigoff (
Crumb
,
Ghost World
) who brings his unique affinity for losers and outcasts to the twisted tale of Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton), a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, foul-mouthed sexaholic safe-cracker who targets a different department store every holiday season, playing Santa while he cases the joint with his dwarf elf-partner Marcus (Tony Cox). With comedic support from Bernie Mac, Lauren Graham, Cloris Leachman, and John Ritter in his final film, Thornton milks the lowbrow laughs with a slovenly lack of sentiment, warming
Bad Santa
's pickled heart just enough to please a chubby misfit (Brett Kelly, hilariously deadpan) who may or may not be mentally challenged. As dry as an arid martini and blacker than morning-after coffee,
Bad Santa
is an instant cure for yuletide schmaltz, and if you think this appropriately R-rated comedy is suitable for kids, your parenting skills are no better than Willie's.
