Too sexual
by Cindy Boyer
I obviously had selective memory when it came to this movie, only remembering costumes, particularly scary scenes, production. I'd forgotten how the ghost seduced the men in the first half. Too much nudity & sexuality for me. It's a good story, & maybe I'm an old fogey now, but I'm going to give it to Goodwill.

Ghost Story (1981)-Good old fashion Ghost Story.
by Keith Mirenberg (www.spaceanimations.org)
Ghost Story (1981) was a good four star horror movie and deserves praise for its fine execution. This movie was made in 1981 and presented a good story despite the lack of later day CGI. A good script, fine acting by old favorites and old fashion props and camera effects were more than sufficient to help make this a great horror movie, both visually and viscerally. Most important, the story was good and kept my interest to the end. Not a slasher movie, and with a minimum of blood this movie worked and is a great one for a dark windy night. The DVD was nicely made and played pretty well on a 1.85, 52" HDTV and an upward compatible DVD player.

Old school ghost story
by z hayes (plano,texas)
People haunted by a tragic event in the past, old friendships, a man who can't get over a lost love and who in fact loves something no longer of this world, Alice Krige as the haunting specter... and plenty more recommend this classic ghost story. Yes, the effects are sorely lacking by today's standards, but it is the storytelling and credible acting that carry this movie.
This is truly a classic ghost story, and highly atmospheric. It is not too often that one gets to experience a dark, Gothic ghost story in the traditional sense. The lack of special effects does not detract from the storytelling - in fact, it is the credible acting that holds this movie together, coupled with the interesting plot.
I love classic ghost/haunting stories and among my favorites are "The Changeling", "The Haunting", "Burnt Offerings", "The Sentinel", "Audrey Rose", "The Lady in White", "The Legacy", and many more.

Great Movie!!!
by lurvin (Ironton, OH)
Yes, special effects may lack. However, instead of being 'spoon-fed' let's think about what is being seen. The script was written from a novel of 567 pages long and contained special effects of a low budget film of 1981.
All actors/actresses portray their varying personalities with exact percision. Alice Kreig portrays a haunting dance. Others stand in a web of disbelief of their youth's indescretion in contrast to activity that haunts them both mentally and physically in their current lives.

A rotten corpse of a movie
by Bob - that guy from No Where (The Middle of No Where)
I never read the book so I can't compare, but the movie as it stands is so bad it will traumatize you more than waking up with a rotten corpse ever could. Patricia Neal is wasted in a few stock "concerned wife' cameos, Houseman is almost wasted, the other three are just there to fill out the chowder society, even the much lauded Alice Krige doesn't sell me on the idea of her being a vengeful ghost. And why did she wait until her killers where more dead than alive to get revenge, why not just show up at Chowder Society story time and scare them to death? The story rips the constant snowstorm from The Shining, but unlike it the storm in GH doesn't seem to prevent anyone from going wherever they want and it never affects the outcome. What's with the escapee and the kid, beyond a chance for some over acting? All that said the real problem with this movie is the plot is given away in the opening moments and the rest of the 100 + minutes is taken up in dreary back story and waiting for the other shoe to drop which it finally does in the most hackly predictable way.
Ghost Story Summary
Four Elderly Men Who Gather Once A Week To Thrill Each Other With Tales Of Terror Find One Of Their Scariest Stories Coming To Life, As A Woman They Mistakenly Left For Dead Fifty Years Earlier Returns To Life To Gain Revenge. Featuring Stellar Talent, Including Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., And John Houseman As The Main Characters, This Superior, Chilling Horror Film Takes Its Story From A Novel By Peter Straub.
Upon its release in 1981, John Irvin's version of Peter Straub's bestselling horror novel was deemed one of the worst adaptations that the genre had ever produced. Now it's available on DVD, and for the first time in widescreen presentation, and not much has changed. It's still a nearly unwatchable dud. Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play old friends, members of the self-created Chowder Society, who get together and tell ghost tales. The scariest story of all, however, is the one they never speak to each other. Fifty years ago, the four men accidentally killed a young woman, and now she's back (with much less meat on her bones) and seeking vengeance. Sound chilling? Well, in Straub's hands it was, and the novel remains the author's finest achievement. Irvin, however, distills Staub's rich characterizations, gradual tension, and creepy atmosphere, and replaces them with aging golden oldies (only Houseman appears to be having any fun) hamming it up and hokey special-effect shots of a rotting corpse. The film moves about as quickly as its ancient cast could during a relay race. The whole thing has arthritis.
