We miss Bernie Mac!
by A. L. Toliver-Smith (Chocolate City, USA)
This was not the most popular movie, but it showcased Bernie Mac's amazing talent for comedy. I laughed throughout the entire movie.

ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAV
by DOT (Tuskegee, Alabama)
Mr. 3000 is one of--if not--my all-time fav movies. I have seen almost all of Bernie's movies and have most of them in my DVD collection. But, Mr. 3000 is just simply the best!!! Honestly, I can watch the movie over and over and over again...In addition to Bernie being the world's greatest comedian, he is also an amazing actor. My favorite part in the entire movie is when Mo (Angela Bassett, who is also one of my fav actresses) visits Stan at his home...Marvin Gaye's "Lets Get It On" starts playing and Mo and Stan start dancing. The man is so talented!!! I'm not sure if many people know but Bernie could dance AND sing. And, what I like most about him--in the movie and off screen--is that he is "real"...and ol' school. "They" don't make them like Bernie anymore. He was one of the "coolest" cats I've ever seen (celebrity or otherwise)!!! In the movie, I like the fact that Mr. 3000 changed his selfish ways and learned from the mistakes that he made when he was younger. Obviously, I loved the way that the movie ended...Angela and Bernie were so beautiful together!!! It has been seven months since Bernie passed away. I still miss the MAC-MAN oh so much!!!

Review of Mr. 3000
by Norman L. Orloff (San Jose, CA USA)
Good movie for baseball fans. A little dated, but what the heck. Good entertainment before the steroid scandals were thought of.

2.5 stars out of 4
by One-Line Film Reviews (Easton, MD)
The Bottom Line:
The late Bernie Mac is appealing but the movie is long-on-formula and short-on-laughs; it's really not worth seeking out unless you're a baseball nut.

Mr. 2,997
by J. H. Minde (Boca Raton, Florida and Brooklyn, New York)
The late lamented Bernie Mac plays Stan Ross, a Milwaukee Brewer who quits the team midseason after attaining his 3000th hit. Ross retires on the strength of his reputation, marketing himself shamelessly as "Mr. 3000."
Years later, the stats gods discover that Stan is actually 3 hits short of the coveted goal, and the out-of-shape baseball jock returns to the game to hit just one more and one more and one more. Mac is perfectly cast in his role.
This is a mildly funny, though entirely formulaic film that doesn't really leave much of an aftertaste, except for its probably unintended critique of how utterly mercenary the present-day game of baseball has become. MR. 3000 is worth watching every now and again just to get a die-hard fan's dander up on that account.
Mr. 3000 (Full Screen Edition) Summary
Array
Stan Ross Was A Baseball Superstar Who Turned His Back On The Game Years Ago When He Finally Hit 3,000 Hits. Years Later, He's Now A Successful, Self-made Entrepreneur Whose Many Businesses Revolve Around His Title: Mr. 3000. But A Clerical Error Has Proven That Stan Is Just Short Three Hits Of His Spectacular Hit Record. Now, With Time On His Side And The Potential To Be Inducted In The Baseball Hall Of Fame, Stan Must Return Back To The Game And Get Back His Title. But Things Have Changed With Age, And As Stan Finds Out, It's Not Too Easy To Get Back Into The Game When He Hasn't Played For Years, And He's Nearing 50.
Bernie Mac is perfectly cast in
Mr. 3000
, a feel-good baseball comedy that capitalizes on Mac's established comedy persona. He plays Stan Ross, veteran first-baseman for the struggling Milwaukee Brewers, who quit the team during a pennant race and, nine years later, discovers that he's actually three hits short of his 3,000 career-hit claim to fame. When he attempts a comeback to correct his record, his selfish past returns to haunt him, along with a former flame (Angela Bassett, who deserves better roles) who's covering Stan's return to baseball for ESPN. It's strictly formula, but the comedy is consistently entertaining, and director Charles Stone III proves that his 2002 sleeper hit
Drumline
was no fluke, injecting observant details into a very predictable plotline. Easily recommended,
Mr. 3000
makes a good double-header with 1989's hit baseball comedy
Major League
.
