Captivating!
by L. K Reyes (Warrenton, Virginia)
I found this film to be very captivating. It is based on a Thomas Hardy novel, but fans of Jane Austen will recognize similar themes of class distinctions and financial discussions mixed in with romantic decisions that are always present in her novels as well. The story centers around a newly arrived sophisticated teacher to a rural village in England. Being the only really eligible lady in town she creates quite a stir among the eligible bachelors in the area. And so she must decide between three men. One, a well-to-do elderly business man, the other a well educated and somewhat pompous parson, and thirdly a well intentioned but humble and good looking farmer/carrier lad. There is a lot of physical attraction between the teacher and the humble lad and the scenes between the two are well done. I'm not too sure how realistic the ending is, but I enoyed the movie and was captivated by it.

Under the Greenwood Tree
by Carolyn S. Morrow (OH USA)
This was a very lighthearted and fun story with a happy ending. I found Dick Dewey a very sensual man and any girl would love to have him kiss her!

Wonderful
by K. Depman (Philadelphia, PA USA)
I really enjoyed watching this movie, and will watch it again and again. I'm now reading the book. The actors, scenery, script. . . it was all top quality. Well done!

I adore this movie
by marblecheshire (Madison, AL)
Under the Greenwood Tree is by far one of my favorite films. It is such a departure from the bittersweet and tragic story of Tess and Angel that it is as if another author wrote it. I love the characters, the actors, the music (only one score mind you, but it is beautiful and sets the mood perfectly regardless of repetition), and the story. It is a great status reversal from that in Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre.
This film has so much pent up frustration in it that when certain scenes happen (don't worry they are all innocent) you would be hard pressed to want better. It certainly does not hurt that James Murray is painfully handsome and Keeley Hawes always makes for an attractive heroine. The chemistry between Dick and Fancy is what I love best about this film. It is about as physical as you can and still be faithful to the time and characters. If you enjoyed the whole wet shirt scene with Colin Firth you will not be disappointed with this film!

The radiant glow of Keeley Hawes--an English rose if ever there was one--anchors
Under the Greenwood Tree
, a light romance from the normally gloomy pen of Thomas Hardy (
The Mayor of Casterbridge
,
Tess of the d'Urbervilles
). When a young educated woman with the preposterous name of Fancy Day (Hawes,
Tipping the Velvet
) returns to a small village to care for her father, she finds herself pursued by three very different men: The poor but handsome Dick Dewy (James Murray,
Sons and Lovers
), the crude but wealthy Mr. Shiner (Steve Pemberton,
The League of Gentlemen
), and the erudite but pompous Parson Maybold (Ben Miles,
Coupling
). The story is slender but enjoyable, with hints of class conflict and the changes due to come from the impending Industrial Revolution. Hawes lends her considerable intelligence and charm to the put-upon Miss Day; she makes you feel the eroticism of washing your hands in the same basin with an attractive man. The accompanying "making of" documentary is also pleasant, though it goes on a bit too long about artificial snow.
