Poseidon Quick Review
A mediocre remake to a classic blockbuster. This seemed to rely on special effects and action sequences than character and plot. Kurt Russell seemed to give an okay performance.

Poseidon Quick Review
This was pretty intense and scary for younger kids (even 12 year olds). Overall a decent adventure but not fabulous.

I Barely Survived This
by D. Reed (Elkton, MD USA)
The original, with its enaging human emotions and riveting action, was a huge success, is now a classic and is considered one of, if not the best, of the disaster genre. Knowing the only reason Warner Bros. would even bother remaking it, this was a sinker (no pun intended). I didn't care who died and who lived. In fact I wanted everyone to die, there being no human connection for me to even see them survive. When they cut back to Fergie and the captain right before the ball room floods, I hadn't seen them (though minor players anyway) in so long, I thought they were dead already. All the characters are brushed over and after fifteen minutes, the wave hits the ship. While Elena (or however you spell her name) does have good motivation to survive, that motivation is revealed to late into the movie so I'm not that phased when she dies. I have a sinking feeling that, while good actors in other films, Kurt Russell (his sacrifice didn't move me at all compared to Gene Hackman's) and Richard Dryefuss only did this one for the paycheck. The one character that wished would die throughout the whole picture was the little boy. He annoyed the crap out of me to the point where ever time he talked, I said "Shut up kid!" I know in the original there was a kid, but he was actually useful and was the one who suggested the go to the engine room. The music is dull and listless and we are pained to endure not one, but TWO songs by Fergie. All in all, a very disappointing film which makes the sequel to the original feel like Gone with the Wind. Here's hoping they don't intend to remake The Towering Inferno.

Posiden

I love this new version, unlike the other new version, this one sticks to the original script, not a terrorist plot. Great movie.

3 stars out of 4

The Bottom Line:
Poseidon is by no means a great movie (though neither was the original, if it comes to that) but it's fun and quick-moving and showcases some nifty special effects.

Fantastic!
by Jo Ellen R. Branham (Morgantown, IN USA)
Okay, I've heard and read all the reviews about how cheesy this movie is. But it's not supposed to be rocket science. It's not even supposed to be real. However, I honestly have no plans to take a cruise anytime soon.
Josh Lucas was wonderful as the reluctant hero. He did not want to be responsible for these people; but as they slowly ascended the ship - and tragedy after tragedy began to strike - you saw his pain in his inability to stop things from happening.
Mia Maestro was fantastic as the stowaway. Going up the vent with the water slowly rising - I was with her every step of the way.
And even Josh Lucas right behind me, either yelling at me or encouraging me, would not have made the going any easier.
Kurt Russell... Can I just say I love Kurt Russell? Always have. He was superb as the overbearing dad - former fireman - ex-mayor. His concern for his daughter was soooo real. And his ultimate sacrifice... well, I'm not gonna ruin this for anyone who's not seen it yet.
Kevin Dillon was great as the drunk loudmouth; Emmy Rossum and Mike Vogel very believable young lovers; Jacinda Barrett and Jimmy Bennett as mother/son; and Richard Dreyfuss... well, I'm not gonna tell you everything.
Probably the most impressive actor in this movie was that WAVE. As Dreyfuss stands on the deck, you see a look of utter horror and panic on his face as the wave begins to blot out the moon... Fantastic! The beginning of the end.
Like I said, it's not rocket science, but it's a fun adventure movie, if you're into that kind of thing. Definitely a "must see" movie if you're a fan of any of these actors.

Poseidon (Widescreen Edition) Summary
Movie Dvd
The 1972 disaster hit
The Poseidon Adventure
was ripe for a big-budget CGI remake, and who better to helm it than thriller expert Wolfgang Petersen, director of
Das Boot
and
The Perfect Storm
? It hardly matters that a TV movie remake (also based on Paul Gallico's original 1969 source novel) was made less than a year before, because Petersen's version is far more spectacular, with shocking digital effects, massive sets, amazing stunt-work and enough fire and water to fill five movies with challenging worst-case scenarios. Once again, the plot concerns the capsizing (by a massive "rogue wave") of a state-of-the-art luxury liner, and the struggle of a small group of survivors (including Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, and Richard Dreyfuss) to climb upwards, to the ship's hull, in their treacherous quest for a safe exit. Unfortunately, most of these characters are two-dimensional and under-developed (especially when compared to the 1972 film's all-star cast), and the unimaginative screenplay by Mark Protosevich (reportedly worked on by several uncredited writers) subjects them to a rote series of obstacles that grow increasingly routine and repetitious, not to mention contrived and illogical. Again, it hardly matters, because Petersen's handling of non-stop action is so slick and professional that
Poseidon
gets by on sheer adrenaline. The capsizing scenes are nothing less than awesome, with some effects so real (and so horrifying) that younger and more sensitive viewers may need to look away. And while it lacks the engaging humanity of the 1972 version,
Poseidon
is certainly never boring. Faint praise, perhaps, but you'll get your popcorn's worth of mindless entertainment.
