Better films in the same genre.
A film that suffers from the superiority of its successors namely Dirty Harry and The French Connection. Steve Mcqueen is fine not on par with Gene Hackman and Clint Eastwood but he is good. The problem is a lacks a compelling story or vil...

Bullitt Quick Review
The overall movie is not great. But it's a must see just for the car chase.

Bullitt Quick Review
Let's get one thing straight - you don't want to watch Bullitt for the story or the acting - you watch it for the action - more specifically one of the greatest car chase scenes put on film. It's not a great film, but it works.

Bullitt
by Vernon H. Waight
This tw- disc package is fantastic! Not only do we get to see a great movie, we also can enjoy a biography of Steve McQueen, plus a short on his influence on "Bullitt" plus another short on the techniques of movie editing.

THE ASSASSINS ALMOST 'DODGE'D A BULLITT!!
by Loves To Read (Twin Cities, MN USA)
Most people remember this film for perhaps the best (or one of the best) car chase scenes in film history with Steve McQueen (driving himself) in a Mustang Fastback chasing two gangsters in a Dodge Charger up and down the hills of San Francisco. It is memorable to be sure, but the movie, as a whole, is decent. While there is some brief but bloody violence it's not just a shoot 'em up film. Steve McQueen insisted that it be realistic and as a result you do get inside the character's heads. You experience detective work as much of it really happens, methodical with patience. Bullitt is assigned to what should be a fairly routine witness protection weekend assignment at the request of Senator Chalmers (Vaughn) who is on a crusade to clean up the mob and get credit for it - the credit is what he mostly cares about. This is his star witness and the hearings will be his stage. However, the assignment quickly goes bad and Bullitt wants to find out who leaked the location and who are the assassins. There are enough twists and turns to keep you involved and, of course, there's the car chase. Roger Ebert likes it because the role of the stoic cop Bullitt is so close to the real Steve McQueen.

Best Car Chase Ever !!
by L. Benefiel (Indianapolis, In USA)
I purchased this DVD about a month ago. I had it on VHS but that didn't do this movie justice. So when I found out it was on Blu-ray I jumped at the chance to buy it. I am a Big Steve McQueen fan. I think this is one of his best movies. People always talk about the car chase in this movie & you will not be disappointed. Plus Steve did all of his own stunts back then. The chase scene with Steve & the bad guy on the runway was exciting as well. If you love Steve McQueen then this should be at the top of your list.

The Best Car Chase I Ever Seen!
by Maximiliano F Yofre (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Bullit (1968) is an icon in crime & action movies, with the unforgettable car chase!
The story is about Detective Bullit who is charged by politician Walter Chalmers to take into custody and protect 48 hours a key witness against the Mafia.
Even if Bullit take all precautions Mob's hit men succeed in wounding the witness and his guard. Chalmers menaces to blame Police Department and Bullit personally for the failure.
The witness dies at hospital and Bullit, with the help of a physician, smuggles the corpse and hide it in the Morgue as a Joe Doe. Then he leads his team in desperate search of the mobsters. What follows is the chronicle of the search against all odds and pressures.
Steve McQueen as Lt. Bullit gives one of his best characterizations, this is not little thing, considering his previous performances in "The Magnificent Seven" (1960), "The Great Escape" (1963) and the remarkable "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968); the future ones in "The Towering Inferno" (1974) and "Tom Horn" (1980).
A very young and stylish Jacqueline Bisset fleshes Cathy, Bullit's fiancée; prolific Robert Vaughn gives Chalmers a poignant interpretation; Robert Duvall, more noted after his appearance in "The Godfather" (1972), acts as a taxi driver. All the cast performs over standard.
Director Peter Yates is at his best, only surpassed, IMHO by his film "The Dresser" (1983). Special mention must be done for Frank Keller editing awarded with an Oscar, William Fraker's cinematography and Argentinean Lalo Schifrin's musical score.
It is an extraordinary movie for all those interested in crime films and movie fans of every genre. Do not miss it!

Bullitt [Blu-ray] Summary
His new assignment seems routine: protecting a star witness for an important trial. But before the night is out, the witness lies dying and cool, no-nonsense Detective Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) won't rest until the shooters and the kingpin pulling their strings are nailed. From opening shot to closing shootout, Bullitt crackles with authenticity: San Francisco locations, crisp dialogue and to-

Peter Yates's 1968 cop drama has its existentialist pretensions, but there is something seductive about its strained seriousness and Steve McQueen's intentionally stoic performance as a San Francisco police detective on the trail of a murderer. A couple of key action sequences boost the film's stature, the most memorable of which is a vertiginous car chase that Yates almost approaches as a dance. Jacqueline Bisset provides window dressing as Bullitt's girlfriend--worried about how much his job strips away his humanity--and Robert Vaughan is almost reptilian as an opportunistic politician.
