Gibson loves him some violence
Exciting, well-paced adventure takes the audience to a time and place we rarely ever see; Mel Gibson's penchance for violence and gore is evident, but the characters are compelling and the imagery, however grotesque, is unflinching. Fina...

Just wow!
I wanted to see this movie from the moment I saw the previews. For one the culture is not one used much in movies and I really was intrigued. Now it doesn't quite follow accurate history and Gibson uses his poetic license to bend the real ...

Apocalypto Quick Review
An enjoyable, if bloody romp through the ancient Aztec civilization. The casting is about as perfect as any film can get even if the story strays. It's nice to see a new culture on screen, I just wish the scope wasn't so limited.

Apocalypto Quick Review
Overall I liked it. There were a few over the top scenes and some humorous parts that were not mean to be humorous. It was typical Gibson though with the slow motion shots and mindless close-ups. It was beautiful at times, but the worst part is, it has nothing to do with Apocalypto.

Apocalypto Quick Review
First off, this movie is beautiful to watch and for the most part, Mel Gibson does a great job with the film. For me, the movie misses on a few huge aspects and we are left with a movie that should have been great but ends up being humorous at times.
It is a story about the Aztec civilization and there quest to appease the gods with human sacrifice. They seek out the natives in the forest to enslave and kill them. This is the first part of the movie where Mel starts messing up. The Aztec?s behead their slaves, but this beheading is not only humorous, watching the heads bounce down the stairs, but it ruins the drama and brings the tension back to square one. So while the tension of the prophesy coming true is beginning, the audience is laughing at the head with the body following it down the stairs.
The next problem I have with this film is due to the predictability and improbability of the second half of the film. Most of the battles and deaths you could see coming from a mile away and though the big chase through the forest was interesting and intense at times it was over the top. For instance, the main character, Jaguar Paw, receives an arrow wound to the stomach and somehow manages to run for over 12 hours without stopping. I realize he is the prophecy but this is a little extreme and the events that follow the chase are a bit too much like Rambo.
I am being a bit more harsh about this movie than others of its type because it had the making to be a classic, to be like Last of the Mohicans, but it will end up being just another decent movie that tried to wow the audience with blood and comic one liners. Check this movie out, but wait for video.

The ending ruined it
by M. Barrera (Houston, Texas)
The Maya civilization ceased to exist before the coming of the Europeans, what would have been a decent movie was ruined by placing the Europeans in that time period thereby suggesting that the Europeans played a part in the Mayan civilization demise.

Time Tunnel
by Kenneth Sohl (Tennessee)
The cast as well as the hundreds of extras are absolutely convincing as Mayans. The cinematic techniques never obscure the action but complement it, the locations, sets and costumes are impossible to take your eyes from, the story is well-paced, starting slow, building in tempo, then finally going flat-out b___s-to-the-wall. Great directing keeps everything flowing smoothly (though I could have done without the pig-testicle eating scene in the opening), and despite a traditional story, makes the film quite a unique experience, imparting a sense of discovery as the story unfolds. Apparently, this was wasted on some of the more sophomoric viewers who were more interested in plot comparisons to lesser "action" movies. Sad.

Yet another outstanding film from Mel Gibson
by Texan (Texas)
You probably won't recognize any actors, but quite frankly it doesn't matter, Mel Gibson directs another outstanding film. I would not recommend this movie for a family movie night- there is a lot of gore, but horror movies are more excessive than this movie is and it has a mysterious story and an interesting prespective from the natives who are caught up in a genocide, yet do not realize a different enemy creeping in...
Yea, I didn't even see this movie in theaters and I knew I wanted it on DVD. I got it for my birthday two years ago and watched it that night! I wasn't disappointed... though my wife will never watch it with me again...(not a good date night movie either)

mel gibson proves his genius
by Edwin Ombac (seattle WA)
this film made me feel like i had traveled thru time, what an accomplishment, the scenes at the maya empire are amazing, brutal at times but done tastfully, i am totaly impressed with mel gibson, this should have gotten a best foreign film nomination or something, hollywood is just jelous of mel gibson, cuz he can do what they wish they could do, make a great movie.

Apocalypto
as the mad, bloody runaway train that it is. The story is set in the pre-Columbian Maya population: one village is brutally overrun, its residents either slaughtered or abducted, by a ruling tribe that needs slaves and human sacrifices. We focus on the capable warrior Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), although Gibson skillfully sketches a whole population of characters--many of whom don't survive the early reels. Most of the film is set in the dense jungle, but the middle section, in a grand Mayan city, is a dazzling triumph of design, costuming, and sheer decadent terror. The movie itself is a triumph of brutality, as Gibson lets loose his well-established fascination with bodily mortification in a litany of assaults including impalement, evisceration, snakebite, and bee stings. It's a dark, disgusted vision, but Gibson doesn't forget to apply some very canny moviemaking instincts to the violence--including the creation of a tremendous pair of villains (strikingly played by Raoul Trujillo and Rodolfo Palacias). The film is in a Maya dialect, subtitled in English, and shot on digital video (which occasionally betrays itself in some blurry quick pans). Amidst all the mayhem, nothing in the film is more devastating than a final wordless exchange of looks between captured villager Blunted (Jonathan Brewer) and his wife's mother (Maria Isabel Diaz), a superb change in tone from their early relationship. Yes, this is an obsessive, crazed movie, but Gibson knows what he's doing.
