Sixteen Candles
Samantha (Molly Ringwald) has a crush on the most popular guy in school, and the geekiess guy has a crush on her. And to make matters worse - her family forgets her birthday, as they are too wrapped up in organizing her older sister's wedd...

Quintessential 80s teen comedy
This movie started my love for 80s teen flicks. Of course it helped that I was a teen when this came out. Although I never understood John Hughes' love for Molly Ringwald and I don't care for her in any film, this movie is still good in ...

Not Hughes' best
This is probably my least favourite John Hughes movie. It didn't have much substance and I just didn't really care about the characters. It did have a good story and Anthony Michale Hall is always watchable in my opinion. It was also a nic...

Sixteen Candles Quick Review
The thing that I love about John Hughes' movies is that everyone, and I mean everyone, in the movie goes through some type of major coming of age change. I like that.

Hated it. I can't stand Molly Ringwald. She was such a mean girl!

Sixteen Candles Quick Review
The John Hughes tradition of making quirky teen comedies still has the magic going on here. Though I don't like it as much as The Breakfast Club, this is still one of the better 80s comedies and a romantic-leaning film I like.

An amazing movie from the 80s.

Not an acceptable PG movie!!
by Joe Engel (Iowa)
Warning! If you are careful about selecting movies that are appropriately rated for your kids, don't buy this one! It carries a PG rating, but by today's standards, it should be R, based on language and nudity. We had to turn it off. If you think anything goes in today's world, then go ahead and buy. I have nothing else to say about this movie, because it was stopped after 15 minutes or so.

Movie review

The movie contains an inappropriate language. Too many filthy and dirty words.
If the Hollywood had skipped those bad words, it would have been a good movie.

Some pretty off color teen stuff here
by R. Bagula (Lakeside, Ca United States)
In contrast to The Breakfast Club this Molly Ringwald movie is pretty tasteless at times:
1) one dollar to see her panties in the boy's bathroom
2) sister getting high on muscle relaxants at her wedding
3) house trashing seniors party
4) sex with a drunken girl by a stranger
All in the name of humor I guess, but this is not a family movie.
I really didn't like it and I usually do like good teen movies.

Sweet 16
by D. Roberts (Battle Creek, Michigan United States)
Samantha (Molly Ringwald) wakes up on the morning of her 16th birthday. This is a milestone most of us remember in one way, shape or form. After all, at 16 we're about 1/2 way through high school and just 2 years(!) away from having to be considered as adults. Just one problem: everyone has forgotten about Samantha's birthday. Oh no! With her older sister getting married, Samantha's family has had too many distractions to keep up with anything involving normalcy.
Poor Samantha is also suffering the heartache of suffering a crush on a senior who could never return her love. Or could he? As Hamlet would say, THAT is the question! {Ah, nothing like teenage puppy love; my oh my how I remember it well}
If you're into 80s nostalgia (like me!) then this DVD is a must-have. It stars Anthony Michael Hall as a mega-geek; just before his career flamed out. It also stars a young John Cusack in a bit part. Even though Cusack has maybe a dozen lines, one can still see the genesis of the on-screen charisma he would exude - little wonder that charisma launched him into stardom.
Looking back 20+ years later, these so called "brat pack" movies are more important than ever for people like me who grew up during the 80s. While my HS years were far from the best years of my life, I still indulge in reminiscing from time to time. If you do the same, then this one is for you!
Just one note: if this film were rated today, it would be at LEAST a PG-13 if not an "R." So.....if you're thinking about buying this for a daughter / niece who is turning 16, I'd think twice about it. I'll leave it @ that.
Sixteen Candles (Flashback Edition) Summary
Movie Dvd
Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario.
Sixteen Candles
marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after
Home Alone
, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for
The Breakfast Club
, another key teen picture of the decade.
