Classic Musical
by J. Barz (Windsor, CT)
This is a beautiful musical. The cinematography alone makes you want to live this story. While others argue whether or not the "older" stars of this movie should have been cast, I feel the movie wouldn't have been the same without them. To me it makes the story much more realistic than having better trained singers in their roles. Funny thing is, I was never an Abba fan until this movie came out ...

Enjoyable, energetic, mindless fun
by R. Gawlitta (Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA)
I avoided seeing this film for a long time because, in the late 70's, I was over-saturated with ABBA. Being somewhat of a film aficianado, I've come to believe that Meryl Streep is among the finest of actresses...ever. I had to check out her musical romp, and I wasn't disappointed. Everyone knows she has a great voice (Postcards from the Edge, Ironweed) and I'm surprised she hasn't been used in other musical endeavors. Regardless, I enjoyed "Mamma Mia!" a lot; a sweet love story centering around middle'aged types. How refreshing. I was entertained a lot, and if you weren't, maybe you should lighten up a bit. I enjoyed the entire cast of old pros, and also the lovely Amanda Seyfried as the catalyst of all the silliness that ensues. It's so silly, but I applaud the film for its unrelenting energy. Kick back, have popcorn and beverages of choice, and enjoy this attempt to bring back the exhuberant musical style that hasn't been successful since "Grease" (1978) or "Hair" (1979). Meryl Streep really shines, once again.

Movie skips!

We were so excited to receive Mama Mia! but were very disappointed when it skipped. Will not purchase from this seller again!
Mamma Mia! The Movie (Full Screen) Summary
The Story Of A Bride-to-be Trying To Find Her Real Father From Three Possible Candidates, Told Using Songs By The Popular '70s Group Abba. Based On The Hit Broadway Musical.
The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of
Mamma Mia!
, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried,
Mean Girls
), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because
Mamma Mia!
is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show
Cybill
, and Julie Walters,
Calendar Girls
). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone,
Mamma Mia!
deserves to find an audience. --
