Heaving Towards Home: No Child Left Behind
by P. Costello
I am not sure how I missed this movie. It is a wonderful reflection on race, family, responsibility, and honesty. The acting is superb, and the ending, if unusually happy, is helpful for those who find themselves in a situation that relates to the one in which the main character finds himself.
To come to the end and to be able to sit down to eat with a family who welcomes you--is that not what Eucharist is? What people all long for as they celebrate, as if compulsively, the annual rehearsals of Thanksgiving and other holidays?
When I was young, I used to help my parents update the books of pictures of children in foster care. Each state had a large binder. And in each one were pictures of hundreds, thousands of young children, mostly African-American. The pictures were removed when they turned 18. I still remember their faces, especially those of siblings who would not be parted.
Antwone was one who made it through and who found, despite being emotionally and physically tortured, some kind of peace and viable adulthood. May this movie encourage us to return again to the children we all have left behind. Children do not deserve the bad ways they are treated. They deserve to have their hands held, their faces held, their stomachs filled, and their loves returned.
The foster care system and the plight of African-American children is not a "black" problem. It is a national, systemic, racist, and classist problem. Denzel Washington did what he could to make a movie that keeps life as it is clearly on the radar. Go and do likewise--

Inspiring Movie
by E. Maxwell (Aguanga, CA USA)
This is a very good movie with a positive message. Based on a true story it tells of a man's struggle to succeed in spite of a very rough childhood. You are left with a warm and up-lifting feeling.

A Well Done Drama
by S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA)
This is an entertaining and very well done drama.
Films of this type are usually not my favorites. This one is an exception. It features an unknown actor (to me at least) named Derek Luke in the title role. Denzel Washington appears as Navy psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport. Although Denzel is the big name, he is not the star of this picture.
Fisher is a very angry and troubled young man. He is a Navy seamen who cannot control his temper. Due to this issue, he is sent to Davenport. Fisher has no interest in talking or exploring his issues at all. Davenport continues to engage him. I won't go any further regarding the plot to avoid spoiling it.
Although there is not a lot of action, the human and mentoring relationships are prominent. It is a story of one finding himself, positive change, and a life enhanced.
This show is well worth watching.
Antwone Fisher [Blu-ray] Summary
Denzel Washington makes his triumphant directorial debut and Derek Luke shines in his first big-screen role in "one of the most touching, heartwarming films of the year." (Jeffrey Lyons, WNBC-TV) Inspired by the true life experiences of its title character, Antwone Fisher tells the dramatic story of a troubled sailer (Luke) who is ordered to see a naval psychiatrist (Washington) about his

Autobiographical movies rarely get more truthfully moving than
Antwone Fisher
. The title is also the name of this fine drama's first-time screenwriter, a former Navy seaman who was working as a film-studio security guard when his life-inspired script was developed as Denzel Washington's directorial debut. This Hollywood dream gets better: unbeknownst to the filmmakers, Derek Luke--a newcomer who won the title role over a throng of famous contenders--was also a friend of Fisher's, and the whole film seems blessed by this fortunate coincidence. Washington's sharp instincts as an actor serve him well, as both a subtle-handed director and Luke's costar playing Jerome Davenport, a Navy psychologist assigned to assess Fisher's chronic violent temper. Their therapy sessions prove mutually beneficial, as this touching true story addresses painful memories, broken desires, and heartfelt reunions without resorting to a contrived happy ending. Fisher's good life is worth celebrating, and Washington brings a delicate touch to the party.
