Whilst I agree with all the previous reviews of 'She Beast'both as a film and the print quality there is one minor disappointment.

When I first saw this movie many years ago at the cinema it had a 'tacked on'ending with Steele & Ogilvy in bed back in their London flat. Whilst making love Steele suddenly turns back into the witch !

This brief scene was always missing from the odd TV showings & is also missing here. Yes I know Ian Ogilvy does not recall it in his commentary on the disc but it was definitely filmed but seems to have been lost.

For those who, like me, initially bought the "Alpha Video" DVD edition of this film, I highly recommend to throw it away and buy this superb edition from "Dark Sky". At last, the image is good and in its original format. I wonder how "Alpha Video" suceeded to get such a bad copy. This company is to be avoided.
Michael Reeves was often described as a genius of the cinema, undoubtedly because he died young. This is quite excessive. He was an average director who did average films, with very little money. This is for amateurs of Barbara Steele and horror from the Sixties.

The She-Beast has been released as a special-edition DVD by Dark Sky Films. Dark Sky is a company committed to making high-class DVD's of rare and unusual horror product. Their version of The She-Beast is no exception.The print looks about as good as this film will look, and it is anamorphic 2:35 widescreen. The DVD also includes a commentary with stars Barbara Steele, Ian Ogilvy, and producer Paul Maslansky. For Barbara Steele fans, this commentary may be the main reason for purchase, since Steele has made very few interveiws. This film was the official directorial debut for cult director Michael Reeves. Reeves is most famous for Witchfinder General, which The She-Beast has some elements of.
Unfortunately this film has some problems plot-wise. The ending of the film is ruined by a Mack Sennet-style chase which is at odds with the rest of the film. There are some creepy scenes, but the film's low budget and its inconsistent tone make it more cult than classic. However, this DVD is highly recommened to Barbara Steele and Michael Reeves fans.

I am very pleased with this dvd of a true classic of the esoteric - you'll be too. The transfer is excellent compared to the older, dark and unwatchable one from Alpha Video. Now, watching the Dark Sky release, I actually can tell what the movie is about! The picture quality is very good, and makes this dvd worth adding to your video library. I have watched it three times already! I love this movie! If you like Fearless Vampire Killers or a Vampire Happening, or the Dracula Saga, you will appreciate She-Beast, especially the print from Dark Sky!

Great to see this movie get a proper dvd release. I've always been a fan, even when all I had to go by was a scratchy lookling budget release, but now it's so much more enjoyable. It's definitely worth the upgrade. I hope Michael Reeves' The Sorcerers eventually gets the same kind of treatment.
