The original Hellraiser ranks so high because it has everything a good horror film should: a disturbing story, even more disturbing monsters and blood, lots of blood. Clive Barker knows his stuff, and it is shown in full gory force here.

For me, this is second to Hellraiser II, but since it is on Blu-Ray, I had to jump on it. The conversion was done quite well. Even made the wife jump when fleshless Frank grabbed Julia for the first time :)

I give this a five star rate review due to its horrifying scenes. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and to this day its still the same as ever before all blood and guts wit the digitally remastered bluray dvd it looks so crisp and sureal. A must have for all horror collectors!!

A fellow by the name of Frank (Sean Chapman) has brought home with him an unusal puzzle-box from a foreign country as he tries to solve it as it has great dark powers to it. It unlocks another dimension which is similar to hell where a group of S&M demons called Cenobites lead by Pinhead (Doug Bradley) who give victims pain and pleasure then they torture and kill Frank. Years later his brother Larry (Andrew Robinson) and newlywed wife Julia (Claire Higgins) as they move in Frank's house as it may seem disgusting at first but they rearrange the place a bit to fit their tastes. However when Larry spills a little blood in a little accident, he unknowingly unleashes Frank back from the dead as a skinless monster who desires Julia and that the wife was once a lover of the tragic figure as she falls for him again. She seduces men secretly then kills them so he can absorb their blood in order to be human again and free of the curse he's suffering, the daughter Kirsty (Ashley Lawrence) discovers what horrible secrets lie within the house and makes a bargain with the Cenobites.

Scary, masterful and gory horror fantasy from writer-director Clive Barker is based on his novel "The Hellbound Heart". Here is an imaginative and original movie in a era of big slasher flicks as it was a breath of fresh air for it had an imaginative yet original idea about demons and S&M including the pleasures of pain & suffering. The film has an HP Lovecraft style with sexual peversion and the occult to create one of the most original and startling horror movies of all time, it even pushed the limits of torture and gore of it's time much like today's "Hostel" and "Saw" movies did as it nearly got an X rating. It's still an atmospheric and disturbing movie that created a memorable horror icon named Pinhead who joined with the likes of Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Jigsaw, Leatherface and many more as one of those classic horror icons. The creature and cenobite make-up effects are very well done including the gore despite the acting not being that great and has an amazing score by Christopher Young, it's a must see for horror buffs.

This Blu-Ray has stunning picture and quality sound with great extras like audio commentary, interviews, featurettes, behind the scenes galleries, Trailers, TV Spots, storyboard galleries, poster and advertising galleries and DVD-Rom Blu-Ray content.

So. I own the VHS. I own the DVD. I own the special edition DVD. And then I got the Blu-Ray. On a 1080p TV (65"), I finally got to experience what this movie was meant to be. If you're a fan of Mr. Clive Barker and the Cenobites, this is the version you NEED TO OWN. If you want to see Uncle Frank come back, blood drop by blood drop, this is the version you NEED TO OWN. Awesome job on upconverting, great extras, HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

OK, you've seen the film so I won't elaborate on the story we all know and love. But the blu-ray disc DOES look and sound amazing. Thanks Anchor Bay! I get the impression that you appreciate Mr. Barker's work almost as much as I do. So, when is Hellraisrer 2 going to be released on blu-ray, hmm? IMO any of the Hellraiser films after #2 aren't even worth talking about as Mr. Barker had little, if anything, to do with them so you can keep those.

Now, for those of you who have not actually read "The Hellbound Heart", the novella on which Hellraiser is based, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. The film is great but the book is so much better! For example, the scene in which Frank first summons the Cenobites is quite chilling and very detailed. The kinds of details you just can't touch on in a film (at least not 20 years ago) and it HINTS at an explanation of the Cenobites (what they are/where they're from) but still leaves them shrouded in mystery, as they should be. But I admit, I'm a much bigger fan of Mr. Barker's writing than the films based on his work. Sorry, but I had to plug the book too :).
