Offers hope to the future of cinema
Maistro Alfonso Cuaron has crafted a gut-wrenching, emotionally-draining and devastatingly brilliantly bleak drama that covers the gamut of emotions without feeling calculated or forced. The child may offer hope to humanity, but this film...

Brilliant, Very Moving Affirmation of Life
I have struggled and struggled with how to begin this review - let alone write it. I seriously cannot remember the last time a film affected me as much as Children of Men. Director Alfonso Cuaron, after rising to such fame with Y Tu Mama T...

Children of ....who cares
I really don't understand why this film is so highly rated. When I saw the preview, I thought it looked like the dumbest movie ever.

After watching the trailers for this movie, I had no intention of seeing it, but, when I heard all the hype surrounding the internet, I knew I needed to check it out.

Children of Men Quick Review
I thought that this movie was okay, but it was a little dark and depressing for my taste. This movie had a good concept and good acting, but it is nothing that I would want to see again.

Children of Men Quick Review
Should be known for being one of the greatest ever. Similar to Shawshank in message: Hope. The plot and the direction is perfect, it's impossible not to like this movie.

Children of Men Quick Review
A superb mix of action, drama and science fiction. In a brutal future that's all too believable Clive Owen is the perfect anti-hero in charge of the most important commidity: hope. A film everyone should watch at least once.

Kee: "I'll call my baby Dylan. It's a girl's name, too."
by Annie Van Auken (Planet Earth)
Monday afternoon I had one of those rare movie-watching experiences: a film I'd never heard of that absolutely amazed me. In fact, CHILDREN OF MEN (Japan/USA/UK-2006) is EASILY the best motion picture I've seen this year.
I'm not much of a sci-fi fan and had my doubts, especially during the story's first half-hour, but what came later was so mind-bogglling, so unique, that I won't dare ruin it for anyone who hasn't yet seen this superb work.
It's set in the dystopian world of 2027. The last child to be born was 18 years earlier and no one knows why women can no longer conceive, thus the human race is on the brink of extinction through natural attrition.
Theo (Clive Owen) is hired to escort an illegal to England's coast. Against all odds, the African-born Kee (Clare-Hope Ashïtey) is eight-months pregnant, which makes her the hope of our entire planet. There are some who wish to exploit Kee and others want her dead. Theo and a handful of friends, including eccentric hippe Jasper (Michael Caine) and Theo's ex, Julian (Julianne Moore), are her only chance for escape and safety.
Once the pursuit begins you will witness things you've never seen before, including one inspiring moment in the midst of total chaotic war.
WHAT a movie! I just now bought a copy for my home library.

Concise Reviews
by James M. Goldsmith
The Movie: Taught action thriller that once gets going provides more than enough suspence and twists to hold your interest. Presentation of the bleak not-too-distant future is lushly and expertly rendered enough to appear believable. Capable acting and good direction keep this one a respectable thrill ride. It is unfortunate that this film gets commonly criticised for the same elements offered up and appreciated in other better-known movies. If you're a fan of action and suspense type films do not be discouraged by the few who can't seem to get the obvious over-riding plot.
The DVD: Excellent transfer that, even presented on a 145" screen was extremely sharp and to be honest, does not warrant a bluray edition if you prefer not to spend the extra money. Enough extras to keep those who like that sort of stuff happy. On the audio side, very impressive and realistic surround effects.

a bleek look in the future
by J. Ryan Reddy (The US of Aholes)
great performances all around and the special effects are not overdone as in most movies based in the future. One of the best movies overall that have seen in recent years.

Beautifully Crafted Cinematic Masterpiece
by Chris Pelletier (Daly City, CA)
This film has been my favorite since I saw it in theaters a few years back. Ever since my love for it has only grown the more times I watch it. This is just a perfect film through and through. The story is gripping, and I'm not even religious. It's extremely well acted, Clive Owen was perfect for the role. The film really shines in the cinematography department. Every shot is like a beautiful photograph. The camera movements are brilliant and the long takes nothing short of amazing. Films don't normally "get me" but this one does every time. The scenes just do something to me other films can't. They did an amazing job of really making you care about these characters. The use of color is awe inspiring. The world is painted like it had been truly destroyed. They didn't go overboard with the sci-fi elements either. You really get a sense of what the world would be like with out the laughter of children.
I strongly recommend this film to anyone. I've showed this to people of all ages and tastes and they've all agreed it's great. I especially recommend this to anyone whose really into film like myself.

Boring and pointless
by Jaewoo Kim (Santa Monica, CA)
What is the point of this film? I am not sure anyone knows. I am not sure if I care after watching this boring dread of a movie for almost two hours. I deserve a full refund just for not sleeping through this movie. And boy staying awake through this film was really hard.
So the world loses its fertility. The film never explains why or how. It doesn't care. It doesn't really care to explain why an immigrant woman is having the world's first baby in 18 years. Why 18 years? Why is this movie so anti anti-immigration? Why in the world would Britain force its immigrants out when the human population is dwindling? The film never cares to explain. By midway of the film, I really didn't care about this film.
The only saving grace of this film is its brilliant continuous action sequences. They were shot beautifully and the filmmakers certainly put an enormous amount of effort into them. Too bad the continuous action sequences were wrapped around a plot worthy of replacing Gigli as the worst of this decade.
In the end, we clearly see the movie never had a point. I totally regret I fought drowsiness throughout this movie when I should have fell asleep during the first minute.
Children of Men [Blu-ray] Summary
Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 05/26/2009 Run Time: 110 Minutes Rating: R
Presenting a bleak, harrowing, and yet ultimately hopeful vision of humankind's not-too-distant future,
Children of Men
is a riveting cautionary tale of potential things to come. Set in the crisis-ravaged future of 2027, and based on the atypical 1993 novel by British mystery writer P.D. James, the anxiety-inducing, action-packed story is set in a dystopian England where humanity has become infertile (the last baby was born in 2009), immigration is a crime, refugees (or "fugees") are caged like animals, and the world has been torn apart by nuclear fallout, rampant terrorism, and political rebellion. In this seemingly hopeless landscape of hardscrabble survival, a jaded bureaucrat named Theo (Clive Owen) is drawn into a desperate struggle to deliver Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), the world's only pregnant woman, to a secret group called the Human Project that hopes to discover a cure for global infertility. As they carefully navigate between the battling forces of military police and a pro-immigration insurgency, Theo, Kee, and their secretive allies endure a death-defying ordeal of urban warfare, and director Alfonso Cuaron (with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) capture the action with you-are-there intensity. There's just enough humor to balance the film's darker content (much of it coming from Michael Caine, as Theo's aging hippie cohort), and although
Children of Men
glosses over many of the specifics about its sociopolitical worst-case scenario (which includes Julianne Moore in a brief but pivotal role), it's still an immensely satisfying, pulse-pounding vision of a future that represents a frightening extrapolation of early 21st-century history. --
