Based on the bestselling manga by Chika Umino, the shojo (girl's) series Honey and Clover (2005) focuses on the misadventures of well-intentioned Tokyo art student Yuta Takemoto. Yuta takes a room in a broken-down building that makes Maison Ikoku look like the Ritz and befriends two equally impoverished student roomers: hard-working Takumi Mayama and erratic Shinobu Morita (who's skipping his way through his seventh year). When Professor Hanamoto introduces them to his favorite relative, the elfin and infantile Hagumi, Yuta and Shinobu fall for her like a bento box of rocks. Hagumi looks like a porcelain doll, paints like Monet, sculpts like Rodin--and acts like a diffident 7-year-old. Honey and Clover is an offbeat mixture of slapstick and treacly romance. As often happens to nice guys, Yuta is eclipsed by a flamboyant friend: Shinobu's unexpected appearances shake everyone up, like a roaring leaf blower dropped into a Zen garden. It's not clear just what he and Yuta see in Hagumi, who carries the notion of kawaii (ultra-cute) to new heights--or depths. When she goes shopping for art supplies with Shinobu, she's too shy to eat in front of him or say she needs to go to the bathroom. The extras include a useful guide to cultural references: most otaku will already know "ramen" and "tatami," but when Shinobu calls Hagumi a koropokkur, it helps to know he's referring to a leprechaun-like figure in Ainu mythology. Honey and Clover spawned an animated sequel, Honey and Clover II (2006), and a live-action feature starring award-winning actress Yu Aoi and J-pop star Sho Sakurai.
