5/5 The Music Takes You Deeper With Each Listen

Having bought Shake Your Money Maker when it came out (along with 3 million others), I've supported this band by purchasing every release since. I haven't always been blown away (Lions was a so-so release). However, live versions of this bands' music always seem to surpass the studio versions. This album was recorded live in a studio, with a small audience, sort of mixing the formats to create a unique feeling. The audience is only audible at the end of each song, and only briefly.

The real beauty of this album shines through on the companion disc "...Until The Freeze". As other reviewers have remarked, I am not a big country or bluegrass fan. However, the depth that Rich Robinson brings to acoustic and pedal steel guitar combined with Chris Robinson's soulful singing really take this band to a new and deeper level. I find myself experiencing different levels of emotion listening to songs like "Greenhorn", "Lady of Avenue A", "The Last Place That Love Lives", "So Many Times", and "Fork In The River". Each listen comes with a new sense of feeling and understanding. THIS MUSIC IS THAT DEEP.

"Been A Long Time" is a great evolution of this band showcasing their true extended jam skills with the song ending in a rousing tapestry of driving rock sound. The real beauty of this album is that it is a unique, artistic experiment that displays real growth in the musicians. They take this music to places they have never gone before and create sounds you would not expect from a typical "Rock" band of 20 years. It is my favorite disc of 2009, easily, and one of their best.

In this age of commercially fabricated "artists" and commercial product marketing "tie-ins" with "pop-stars", this band is creating music as an artistic expression. It is bands like this one that need our support, before all we are left with is music created by corporations.

5/5 The crowes srtike back

I'm a fanatic of the crowes since 1992, with "The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion#. I still find they can grow musically (as in the Warpaint Live DVD), and I think they try to satisfy their followers with their musical performances. The quality of the package and the recording of the CD is excellent and I enjoyed it as in my very good old times. I say thanks for the Crowes!

5/5 Crowes keep up the great work

With Before the Frost...After the Freeze the Crowes have a little bit of something for everyone - rock, blues, country, bluegrass...or a combination of all of them! These guys can play it all. After Warpaint I was unsure what road they would travel down next and it turns out they took them all. Maybe it was the influence of playing up in Woodstock, NY at the great Levon Helm's recording studio in front of a live audience that brought out the country/rocl/blues kne-slapping jukes that come out of this album. There is a fine collection of varied songs on here ranging from the more rock-based tracks early on with Before the Frost...to some pure bluegrass on the bonus download album ...After the Freeze. All good. Keep it up guys. I'll come down and listen to a jam with you guys anytime.

The new offering from the Crowes is a departure of sorts. Much more of an organic, rootsy, almost country vibe is present (esspecially the Until the Freeze tracks). And, it includes what I feel is the one of the best ballads they've ever done - Appaloosa. Best song on the album in my opinion. Another solid offering with shades of old Crowes mixed with some less familiar sounds.

This is a fabulous disc! So many musical influences! I recently saw the Crowes in concert and they were incredible! Buy this disc - you'll love it!
