A Love Story
by GabitaS (El Paso, TX)
I was interested in purchasing this movie due to the fact that I had seen previews at a theater and it looked quite captivating. When it was released in video, I tried renting it for 2 months and it was never available so I just assumed that it was a popular movie. I decided to purchase it and the movie was different than what I had expected. It was a love story but moreso it had a twist that was quite a realistic plot about gang life of the MS-13 El Salvadoran gang and the gang culture and about what happens when you try to leave the gang. It also depicts the illegal immigrant way of life and the dangers encompassing their escape to the U.S. The story ending was very sad, almost depressing, but it leaves the viewer with the hope and anticipating that the young lady will be able to start a new life of freedom and opportunity.

The most awesome movie of the year!
by Gayle Ramsay (Colmar Manor, MD United States)
Yes, it does contain violence and some sex scenes. However, the story is so relevant, the characters so compelling, the acting so convincing, this is a story that just had to be told. The action and sex is not like hollywood, put there solely to entice, but it is fundamental to the story, part of the life these characters are undergoing. Some of my friends have reacted, 'Do you think that really happens?' Yes I do. Bit and pieces of things people have recounted to me all occur in this movie. The danger of taking the train, the bravery and determination of those who make the journey, the harshness of ganglife, the support some communities show for the travelers, the predators who prey on them, all are the real deal. Don't miss it. Everyone I have shown it to, wanted to see it again.

Great movie!
by Gluteus Maximus (SoCal)
This was a great movie to watch. The ending could have gone more in depth but still a great movie from start to finish.

When will they ever learn???
by World Citizen (Columbus, OH for now, the 777 got old!)
This movie tries to glorify people who are making a choice to break the law! Enough of this already! So it's a rough trip--nobody asked them to come here. As for the Mexican bandits, why do you think we are trying to keep Mexicans OUT of USA--we know many of them are criminals!! We who were born here or are legal residents simply don't want them here! BUT Since they can't justify their greed, they always yell "racism!" Don't even waste your time watching this loser movie about losers! Better spend your money on laxatives if you are that "full of it!"
Sin Nombre Summary
Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 09/01/2009 Run Time: 96 Minutes Rating: R
Although the phrase never appears in this documentary-style Spanish-language thriller,
sin nombre
means "nameless." First-time California filmmaker Cary Fukunaga tracks two such individuals, emblematic of many immigrants, whose narratives converge by the suspenseful ending. Willy (Edgar Flores), a Mexican native who belongs to the brutal Salvadoran brotherhood Mara Salvatrucha is just trying to make it through each day alive, while Sayra (Paulina Gaitan) seeks a better life for herself by traveling from the Honduras to join relatives in New Jersey. Their worlds collide on a freight train heading north as Willy and his brethren relieve Sayra and her companions of their few valuables. When the leader of the Mara attempts to have his way with her, Willy steps in, making himself a target, and the couple races for the border before the gang catches up to them (just as Willy gets separated from his best friend, Sayra gets separated from her family). Winner of directing and cinematography awards at Sundance and produced by
Y Tu Mamá También
's Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna,
Sin Nombre
takes a frustratingly long time to get cooking. The actors, some non-professionals, give persuasive performances, but the Mara are so reprehensible, the first act makes for tough going. Once Willy breaks free from their stranglehold, however, he starts to engender some sympathy. As with the desperate Columbian drug mule in
Maria Full of Grace
, it's hard not to root for him and Sayra to beat the odds in order to start fresh in the States.
