Vampyr (Der Traum des Allan Grey) by Carl Theodor Dreyer, includes "The Mascot" (Fétiche, 1934) by Wladyslaw Starewicz [IMPORTED For ALL-REGIONS, NTSC] Summary *** IMPORTED FROM SOUTH KOREA *** This DVD is a Masterpiece Double-Feature: In Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer's "VAMPYR" (released on May 6th 1932 in Berlin), Allan Gray, a young, curious aristocrat, arrives at the isolated chateau where the two daughters of an old gentleman are targeted by a vampite for death. It is a truly scary movie with a compelling bad dream-like atmosphere, down to the famous scene where Allan watches himself from inside the coffin being buried alive. Rudolph Maté's masterful camera work of light, shadows, and novel angles creates a spell of horror without slashings or bared fangs, with flickering and intentionally washed-out exposures that further blur the line between reality and dream. It is a mostly-but not entirely-silent film with English intertitles in a Gothic-look script, 72 min. long. The second movie is a delightful surprise: The 26 min. animated 1934 masterpiece by Russian director Wladyslaw Starewicz "THE MASCOT" (Fétiche)-his longest film. Astounding animation without the modern technology, blended with real-life action, it tells the story of a stuffed puppy, who gets a beating heart when a tear of a mother with a child very sick with scurvy falls on it. The child needs an orange to get well again but she has no money to buy it, and the puppy embarks on a quest to find one. Apart from the astonishingly perfect animation, the film's story is beautiful and rich, with lovely Parisian melodies as the musical score. The two movies have not been restored, and as such, are in remarkably good condition. Title cards are in English, and the Korean subtitles are removable.
