Will Apple go both ways?

October 18th, 2006

mac-blu-hd.gifAccording to Think Secret there is strong evidence that Apple will support both Blu-ray and HD-DVD with their upcoming OS, OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Myself I find this one a little hard to believe considering Apple is on the Blu-ray board, and the HD-DVD and Blu ray camps aren’t exactly on the best of terms these days. But it would be a great thing for the next gen format if Apple did do this. Then if Microsoft followed suit, which again isn’t likely, then the “war” may well be over.

Apple did first suggested in a 2005 press release that it would support both formats.

Apple is committed to both emerging high definition DVD standards—Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. Apple is an active member of the DVD Forum which developed the HD DVD standard, and last month joined the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association.

There will probably be external HD DVD drives available for Mac, so it’s a good thing.
