The buzz in the industry is saying Toshiba is planning a big announcement next week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
The word is they will be unveiling their third line of HD DVD players that will be even cheaper than its current versions. Toshiba chief Yoshihide Fujii offers this tantalizing hint:
“At first I thought the price threshold is $499. Maybe coming next is $399 and after that is $299.”

Time to move to Japan. The world’s first HD-DVD recorder is coming from Toshiba. At the recent CEATEC 2006 event, you can only found HD-DVD-related products at Toshiba’s booth. One of them is the RD-A1 HD-DVD media recorder. Dubbed as Vardia, this world’s first HD-DVD recorder has the ability to record HDTV program directly onto HD-DVD disc. Both single-layer and dual-layer HD-DVD-R discs are supported, as well as backward compatibility for DVD-RAM/R/RW media discs.
It comes with a whopping 1TB of HDD so if you run out of disc, you can keep it on the hard disk first. Video encoding is done in H.264 and VC-1 formats respectively.
Measures 457 x 408 x 159 mm and weighs 15.2 kg, Vardia RD-A1 HD-DVD Recorder is equipped with HDMI, iLink, 5.1-channel analog audio, coaxial digital, and optical digital output interfaces, along with S-image, three composite and analog audio, D1, and DV input terminals. Network connectivity in compliance with DLNA guidelines is also supported by this 398,800 Yen recorder (or around $3462). No word on an American Release at this time.
