Waterworld Quick Review
Nothing about this movie is good. Nothing.
2/4
Waterworld Quick Review
Known more for its incredible budget and under-performance, Waterworld isn't the complete turkey people make it out to be. It's not spectacular, but at least it's original and interesting. It could have benefited from a 30-minute cut.

Waterworld Quick Review
Interesting plot can't carry dumb action scenes throughout the movie. The amazing part about this film is that they spent 175 million to make this movie and grossed under 100 million. What a waste.

Waterworld Quick Review
I like this movie because it has an original story and some tiny details that make me believe. Hopper is a hoot and Costner is above average. With some good action sequences and some interesting characters, it out ways it's down parts.

No Extended Cut, No Purchase. WTF is wrong with these Greedy Studios? Just like the Rest of America, all about Greed. It's sickening.

No Extended Version!?
by Jesse U. Welbes (Wi)
I'm a big fan of this movie.
I had preordered it and thought it included the Extended version. I would have rather owned the version
that adds 40 minutes and makes a more enjoyable movie experience.
I was dissapointed to find out it was the original theatrical version only.
If I had known that, I wouldn't have purchased it. It's great have Waterworld on Bluray, it looks amazing,
but I would have rather waited for the extended version that I'm sure will come out eventually. The movie companies always have to find a way to make an extra buck at our expense by making us by the same movie twice.

This is a classic movie

There are few movie's out there that I can watch over and over again and this is one !!!
This movie got bad reviews and everyone just ran with it.
I really like this movie, is't up there with Sling blade as one on my favorite movie's.
You people know you also like this movie !!!!
So stop the crap, someone out there likes it because it's one of the top selling blue ray's out there.

Upset!
by Wynne Mohrmann
Why didn't they release the extended version on blu-ray,like the did on dvd, isn't that one of the benefits of blu-ray,extras,special editions,EXTENDED VERSIONS!!??,I bought this cause I thought this was the extended version,it looks exactly like the dvd release...disappointed

Weak movie. Weak Blu-Ray release
by SRFireside (Houston, TX United States)
My goodness. The premise of this movie shown so much potential. The news of it's ever explosive budget made you wonder just how grand a spectacle you would see. Kevin Costner recently directed and starred in the award winning movie Dances With Wolves, and he is back in the same roles. So much expectation was put on this film and in the end it was a mess. Not a complete horrible mess that would make you run from the theaters screaming, but enough of a mess to be very disappointed.
Waterworld was an interesting concept that never hit home due to.. well to be specific some pretty shoddy writing. Time and time again history has shown us that not even the most expensive sets with the most popular actors will save a badly written movie. The idea seems nifty enough. Earth is now flooded and people survive on makeshift boats and floating platforms with no hope of ever seeing dry land again. In walks a hybrid who can breath underwater and a kid with a key to what can be the last bit of land on the entire planet. They save humanity from evil and give them palm trees and coconuts to live off of the rest of their lives. There really isn't much to the basic of the story, so the devil is in the details.
The details is where this movie fails. While they give enough attention on various things that help flesh out life in this new world they utterly fall flat on other basic concepts. For one this hybrid dude (Costner) who can breath underwater (an amazingly useful talent on a flooded planet) gets persecuted as freak of nature by normal humans. You can say the story merely illustrates how man fears what's different from them, but give me a break. That's like cavemen kicking out the dude who can make fire. It doesn't make sense. Then you have the villains who act all evil and nasty for apparently no real good reason. What is their motivation? They don't seem to have much other than to be mean (those evil smokers... is this some silly commentary on the evils of cigarettes?). So you have peace loving civilians who hate the best thing since sliced bread and you have bad guys who love just being bad. I don't see any motivation to root for or empathize with anybody here. There is little to care about in this film since it doesn't take the time to build any empathy. Top that all off with a few seriously ridiculous pop culture references and you get a mega-flop.
Special effects are of course decent for a $175 million dollar movie (and that's 1995 dollars) and sets are believable. I just don't see how they can spend such vast amounts of money on them. I know that the majority of it was to build the floating city, which was created entirely to float out to sea. But wouldn't a non-floating local set with the proper camera angles and a little ingenuity cost a lot less? Acting is... well... bordering on cheesy in some scenes. Dennis Hopper as the main bad body, Deacon, just seems to enjoy playing it over the top. Costner plays the mariner with disinterest in his fellow man you wonder if he's just phoning it in. In other words no real subtlety going on here. Maybe I'll give props to Tina Majorino for playing her spunky character convincingly and maybe I'll give props to Jeanne Tripplehorn for playing a convincing mother figure for Tina. Other than that there's not much to write home about.
This Blu-Ray release may be in high definition (VC-1 codec) and may have DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 in English and DTS 5.1 in five other languages, but that's just about all it seems to have. About the only special feature announced is BD-Live. So what do you get? The aforementioned HD track and DTS tracks in Spanish, French, German, Italian and Japanese. You get subtitles in all of these languages as well as Korean, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portugese, Greek, and Mandarin. I love the variety in languages, but this isn't the movie you want the world to hear. It seems to me this is the "light" release and maybe later on they will release a special edition. Maybe in 2015 we'll get 20 Year Anniversary edition. Either way it's not this release that will have whatever featurettes they will eventually make. Then again no previous release of Waterworld had any special features.
If you ask me a better deal would be to get the Extended Edition DVD they made last year. You get the theatrical release AND an extended cut that fleshes out the movie better with almost 40 additional minutes. This release is best for high def junkies and people who want a treasure trove of language options. The rest can wait.
