Over the Top Quick Review
Just another great Stallone movie.

Over the Top Quick Review
A sappy story of an estranged father and son brought together by the wishes of their dying mother/ex-wife. And of course, there is a wealthy ex-father-in-law trying to take custody of the kid. Not the lamest movie but certainly not good.

Over The Top RULES!
by Josh Garcia (Premont, TX USA)
If I had to choose a movie that inspires me to find a way to push through it is OVer THE TOp. I love the music in this movie! I was little when this movie came out and its one of my favorite movies. Also the way Stallone jacks fools up with his crazy arm wrestling finisher.

The struggle for an estranged sons love
by D. Keith (Houston, Texas United States)
Over The Top is a fantastic piece of cinema couture, in which Sylvester Stallone shows his softer side. Really. I mean it. Not one person dies. Well, one person dies, but it is a sad event.
Right, so Sylvester Stallone is a truck driver who is estranged from his wife and son. His baby's momma get's hold of him and tells him that his son is finishing the year at military academy, and that she would love for him to reunite with his father. So, Sly-dog goes to pick up his kid, who immediately flips out and insists that Sly can't be his dad. Probably because he is all buff, and the kid is a bit of a weeny, but who knows.
So, father and son head off on a cross country, diesel fueled, emotional thrill-ride in Sly's (non-sleeper cab) big rig. Along the way, we learn about Stallone's primary passion: arm wrestling. After his son discovers that Sly is a good arm wrestler, he starts asking questions, which leads to a training montage, and eventually a challenge between the son and some spiky haired rapscallion playing pinball at a truck stop.
After this event, where father and son really connect, the boy is stolen (Stolen!) away by his own grandfather (maternal grandfather, go figure). More stuff happens and then Sly drives a big rig through his rich Father In-law's mansion and lays it all on the line: Sly will win the national arm wrestling championship in Las Vegas, and when he does, he will be taking his son back once and for all. Can Sly do it? Can he make a heartwarming movie where he has to arm wrestle for custody of his son? Over The Top is the answer!

Great 80s flick, excellent picture quality on Blu-ray
by Tiberius (BOLINGBROOK, IL USA)
This review is for the Blu-ray, not the movie. Despite the lack of extras, save the original theatrical trailer (in SD, with Don LaFontaine doing the voice-over). The picture quality is truly excellent, putting the DVD to shame. When the movie starts and Linc Hawk is shown driving his big rig, you can literally see every hair in his beard, it is almost startling for a 20+ year old movie. Also, considering it wasn't made by a major Hollywood studio (it was made by Golan-Globus Productions), I wasn't expecting it to look this good. The audio is decent but not spectacular. While it would have been nice to have more extras on the disc, this is without a doubt the best the movie has looked since playing in the theatres in 1987. Besides, this is not only a guy movie, but also (part) chick-flick! An easy recommendation, not only for Stallone and arm-wrestling fans!
Over the Top [Blu-ray] Summary
Rocky and Rambo star Sylvester Stallone gives fans another reason to stand up and cheer. He stars as hard-luck big-rig trucker Lincoln Hawk and takes us under the glaring Las Vegas lights for all the boisterous action of the World Armwrestling Championship in Over the Top (co-scripted by Stallone).Relying on wits and willpower, Hawk tries to rebuild his life by capturing the first-place prize mon
Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/08/2009 Run Time: 134 Minutes Rating: Pg13
Arm-wrestling might be far down on most viewers' list of "most cinematic sports," but Sylvester Stallone certainly goes the distance to prove the contrary in this lightweight but entertaining mid-'80s action/family feature. Stallone (who co-wrote the script with Stirling Silliphant) plays taciturn trucker Lincoln Hawk (though he's called "Hawks" by large portions of the cast), who faces two considerable challenges at once: to win the Las Vegas Arm Wrestling Championship, and to impress the son (David Mendenhall) who's been turned against him by his grandfather (Robert Loggia, snarling up a storm). Menahem Golan's direction and the soundtrack of bombastic '80s pop-rock (by Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, and others) is anything but subtle, and the host of opponents Stallone faces look like they were culled from professional wrestling (indeed, veteran grappler Terry Funk is in the cast), but Sly stalwarts and '80s action aficionados may find this rousing entertainment. The widescreen anamorphic DVD offers only the original theatrical trailer as an extra.
