Released not long before drummer/singer Country Dick Montana's onstage death in November 1995, the 10-song compilation BEST OF THE BEAT FARMERS collects songs from the roots-rockers' four previous albums for Curb Records: VAN GO, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, POOR AND FAMOUS and the raucous live powerhouse LOUD AND PLOWED AND LIVE. While some purists think that their early albums, TALES OF THE NEW WEST and GLAD 'N' GREASY, are the Beat Farmers' creative peak, the four Curb albums are a better example of roots rock striving towards commercial viability than just about any other, mostly because the Beat Farmers obviously didn't strive too hard. There are no real concessions to chart popularity in these songs--sadly, no band with a singer like Country Dick Montana could ever be huge--but the Beat Farmers were never afraid of pop music. They're still missed.
