This is a Great Retrospective For Ike Turner!
by Perry Celestino (Tahmoor, NSW Australia)
Well, I had the good fortune this year (May) to go to Clarksdale, Mississippi where Ike Turner was born. I got to see the Riverside Hotel where he lived and wrote "Rocket 88". He was a driving force in early blues playing piano with Pinetop Perkins and guitar on Otis Rush's "Double Trouble". This concert was recorded at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2002. It
provides us with a great "post-Tina" look at the Blues Roots of Ike Turner and his famous "Kings Of Rhythm". This DVD was produced by the great European blues label Charly (from the UK) so you know it would be good.
The set list is excellent with great versions of Louis Jordan's "Caldonia" (also done by Muddy Waters, BB King, Albert Collins and others), "Mercy Mercy" from Cannonball Adderley and the Buckinghams (remember them!!??), a great rendition of Eddie Boyd's "Five Long Years", of course we hear "Rocket 88" and Ike sings which is also very interesting! The tune "Ike's Tune" is really Freddie King's "The Stumble", also done by Peter Green and Luther Allison, is a lively tremolo driven version. The final tunes feature a sexy "new Tina" who offers the old standbys "Proud Mary", and Sly Stone's "I Want To Take You Higher".
This is a well presented show with good photography, sound and presentation. The extras are also very good and this is a fitting memorial for Ike Turner who died last year. It is must for Blues fans and those who have an interest in the history of American Music.

A live-in-concert DVD capturing the sensational performance of the titular legends at the North Sea Jazz Festival of 2002
by Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
Ike Turner & The Kings of Rhythm is a live-in-concert DVD capturing the sensational performance of the titular legends at the North Sea Jazz Festival of 2002. In addition to the sensational performance, Ike Turner & The Kings of Rhythm is packed with extras: "The Early Years" documentary, concert snippets from a wide variety of other locations, a biography and discography, and more. A "must-have" for true fans of Jazz in general and Ike Turner in particular. The songs performed are "Chicken Shack", "Ike & Pinetop's Boogie", "Mercy, Mercy", "I Need A-Nuddin", "Caldonia", "'Five Long Years", "Baby's Got It", "Rocket '88'", "Tequila", "Ike's Tune", "Steel Guitar Rag", "I'm the Only One", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Proud Mary", and "I Want To Take You Higher". Approximately 2 hours 12 minutes.
Live in Concert Summary
Ike Turner's actual music career began in earnest in the late-1940s where he formed a group whom he christened The Kings of Rhythm. In 1951, the band recorded what some historians have debated as "the first Rock'N'Roll record" with "Rocket 88", credited to Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats (this band did not actually exist). Brenston was both the band's saxophonist and the lead vocalist of the song, and on the original Chess release was listed as the song's writer. "Rocket 88" was produced at Sun Studio in Memphis by Sam Phillips. The record was one of the first examples of guitar distortion, which happened by accident when one of the amplifiers was dropped before the recording. Ike and the Kings of Rhythm settled into local fame in St. Louis where the band locally recorded for a St. Louis label and even appeared on local television shows.
