A slice of life
by bernie (Arlington, Texas)
Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) self-made poet has successfully avoided tying the knot with several women by finding out their flaws in the "nick" of time. Looks like his luck may be running out.
He falls in love with the local butcher, Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis), who may be more of a cut-up than she appears. Will Charlie Axe-cept her at face value or will his suspicious nature once again interfere with marital bliss?
If he takes the plunge will his friend (Anthony LaPaglia) find out that Charlie is not paranoid and come to his rescue (in time)?

Comedy, Romance, + Horror
by Bradley Headstone (New York)
Well, unlike "Hocus Pocus" or "Clue," I can not call this essential Halloween material. But that said, it is an interesting combination of comedy, romance, and horror. It starts in a coffee house. Charlie (Meyers) is talking about his 'women troubles' with his friend Tony. (Tony happens to be an undercover cop.) Tony feels that Charlie is being absurd and paranoid: "Charlie, every time you meet a nice girl, you come up with some paranoid reason why you should break up with her." Tony basically feels that Charlie is afraid of commitment, and the possibility of getting married. And we are permitted to go along with Tony's view.
We then meet Charlie's parents. The father is also played by Meyers. He has an energetic and theatrical personality. His mother is somewhat of a ditz, but she is sweet in her way. She is worried about a woman in her 'less than universally accepted' newspaper who has been killing off her husbands soon after their marriage. While Charlie is afraid of marriage, he doesn't take the story seriously, seeing that this comes from an 'off beat' newspaper.
Charlie then meets Harriet (Travis). He starts to fall for her. She seems to be a sweet girl, but she does have some flaws. (One example is when she asks Charlie if he has ever thought of pushing someone off a cliff.) Harriet then starts to say some things that make Charlie think the story in his mother's newspaper is true, and that Harriet may be the killer.
Tony thinks Charlie is being paranoid because on a subconscious level, Charlie thinks that Harriet may be Mrs. Right. But we are allowed to wonder at this point if Charlie's fears are valid. Charlie and Harriet break up for a short while, but they soon get back together. In an especially touching moment, Charlie's father thanks him for giving them a nice anniversary party, and then Charlie and Harriet decide to get married. (Interesting that the anniversary of his parents help Charlie overcome his fear of getting married.)
There is a comical, but at the same time, nice wedding reception. (An especially poignant moment is when Charlie and his father embrace.)
All seems well, but Tony start finding things out about Harriet that make him fear for Charlie's life. Throughout the movie, we may have felt like we were watching a comedy or a romance. But the last 1/2 hour looks like a Halloween movie. There is a surprise twist that I won't give away.
The best thing about this movie is that sometimes we think we're watching a romance; other times, we think it's a comedy; and the last half hour falls into horror. While this did not do well in theaters, it has gathered a significant cult following.

BIG SCAM!!!!!! NOT A SPECIAL EDITION.
by Cookiedulce
First off let me say this is one of my favorite movies.
Hence the 4 star.
It does NOT get a five star because this is a huge SCAM!
I bought this movie because it said special edition. I was so excited thinking it would have interviews or something. I put it in my dvd player and to my surprise NOTHING.
How can this be called special edition. What a fool I am!
The only thing different from this one is that it has been remastered.
That is it! It also has a few previews which I dont think the original had but WHO CARES!
WHAT A SCAM!!!!!!!!!!

Not a Special Edition!!!
by Doug (Minneapolis)
Buyer Beware! I love this movie and give the movie five stars. However, this new re-release is NOT a special edition. There are no extras at all. Not even the trailer for the movie. It does offer several trailers for other movies and an anamorphic widescreen transfer, but that's nothing special and is standard on most DVDs. If this movie is a special or deluxe edition then every DVD is a special or deluxe edition and we need a new name for DVDs that include such things as audio commentary, documentaries, featurettes, still galleries and trailers. Calling this release of "So I Married an Axe Murderer" a special edition is false advertising and the marketing hustlers at Sony who are responsible for selling this hoax should be called on this and be held accountable. Their integrity is seriously called into question and they need to take a course on ethics. I'm returning my copy of this movie for a refund.

Classic Mike Meyers
by C. Romero (Brookings, Oregon)
This is a must have for Mike Meyers fans! Set in scenic San Francisco, Meyers plays an out of love Beatnik Poet who falls in love with the mysterious Mrs. "X" (Nancy Travis) who could likely be a romantic serial killer. Meyers shows his chops for character acting by playing not only the lead role of Charlie, but also Charlie's bagpipe loving father. One view of this movie will have you quoting lines for weeks to come! Also, don't miss the hilarious Alcatraz tour scene with a cameo appearance by Phil Hartman!
So I Married an Axe Murderer Summary
Comedy sensation Mike Myers stars with Nancy Travis in this hatchet-driven romantic comedy about a wedlock-shy coffee house poet who finally meets the perfect woman. When it comes to love Charlie Mackenzie (Myers) has had his share of bad luck: Sherrie was a klepto-Charlie still can't find his cat. Jill was unemployed-but Charlie knew she really worked for the Mafia. Pam smelled like soup-beef vegetable soup. Good thing for Charlie these shortcomings became apparent if only to him. Good thingfor Charlie he discovered the truth before things went too far-before he stumbled into MARRIAGE! Because to Charlie the "M" word is just one step away from the fate foretold in that chilling phrase: "Till death do us part." When Charlie meets Harriet Michaels (Travis) everything changes. Harriet's not like the others. She's smart sexy and crazy about Charlie. This time Charlie is determined to overcome the fears that sabotaged his past relationships. This time he's ready for some commitment.Sure Harriet may have her shortcomings-but so what? After all those other women what's the worst she could be? An axe murderer?
