IVANHOE DVD
by S. E. Haley
I enjoyed this video when it was first out on Public Broadcasting and was glad to see it on DVD. It's a great interpretation of Sir Walter Scott's classic story of knights and social mores of the Middle Ages. Anthony Andrews was my favorite then and with this new DVD, it brings the story back to life. For those who like the classics told in a way that relates the time that era, they would enjoy this tale very much.

Ivanhoe (1982) DVD Review
by Manny M. Agah
This made-for-TV movie is rather one-dimensional and geared for young audience. James Mason is one of my all-time favorite actors, but I didn't care for his haircut in this film. I'd rather watch the 1952 version, which has nice photography and a superb score by Miklos Rozsa.

Anthony Andrews is excellent

Finally!!! It took way too many years for this movie to come out on DVD.
Growing up watching Ivanhoe on TV every Christmas this movie became an instant must-see. Something that my sister and I would eagerly await (and we still do) every year.
Really good cast. James Mason, Sam Neil and Olivia Hussey are all very believable but it is Anthony Andrews who steals this movie. This superb British actor demands every scene that he is in - making one feel like it is all happening in ones living room.
Not owning this movie is depriving one self of rarely seen magic.

The ONLY true adaptation (so far)
by Anna Jung
I have not seen the 1952 version, but I have seen this version and the A&E miniseries. I have also read the book a number of times (it is one of my favorites). Although the A&E version is longer and includes scenes and characters that this version leaves out (such as Urfried, Gurth, the opening meal), the A&E version distorts the story (adding absurd subplots) and drastically changes the characters and the dialogue. This version, although far too short, is true to the book in its depiction of the characters and the story. I have watched it 10 times and I plan to watch it many more, this ones a keeper (2 million Swedes can't be wrong).
Update: I have now watched the 1952 version and stand by opinion here. The 1982 version is the only true adaptation. The 1952 version distorts the story even worse than the 1997 version. I have watched it at least 20 more times since my original review and still love it.

Ivanhoe
by E. Ritchie
This is our favorite film version of Ivanhoe marred only by a poor portrayal of Rowena.
Ivanhoe (1982) Summary
Sir Walter Scott's Epic Novel Of Timeless Romance And Knightly Daring Comes To Life! The Year Is 1194. At Long Last, The Noble Knight Wilfred Of Ivanhoe (anthony Andrews) Has Returned From The Crusades To Regain His Title And Win The Hand Of His Beloved Lady Rowena (lysette Anthony). But First, He Must Defeat A Villainous Alliance That Seeks To Steal The Throne From Its Rightful King. Steeds Thunder And Blades Clash As The Battle Rages! With An All-star Cast, Featuring Academy Award® Nominee James Mason (best Actor In A Supporting Role, The Verdict, 1982), Olivia Hussey And Sam Neill, This Is Ivanhoe As You've Never Seen It.
This 1982, 180-minute television remake of the original MGM feature, produced 30 years before, is the rare makeover of a classic that works quite well under its own steam. Anthony Andrews plays the disinherited knight who returns from the Third Crusades and is determined to raise the ransom to free a kidnapped King Richard (Julian Glover). With his bid rebuffed by his estranged father (Michael Hordern), and the affection of the latter's ward, Rowena (Lysette Anthony), compromised, Ivanhoe looks toward the generosity of the beautiful Rebecca (Olivia Hussey)--whose father (James Mason) he rescued from anti-Semitic Normans--for help. But a plot by faithless friends to discredit Ivanhoe, and his subsequent partnership with Robin Hood (David Robb) to save the day, keep this story from slowing down even for a minute. Originally a miniseries, this production has enough breadth to provide lots of breathing room for the script and cast to mine all the drama they can from Sir Walter Scott's novel. This is also a great-looking movie, with wall-to-wall pageantry, superb costumes--the works.
