3D leaves a lot to be desired
by A. Craft
I concur with those who have posted complaining about the quality of the 3D episodes. It is painful to watch these two episodes. I'm curious about the postings that give positive assessments of the 3D episodes. These folks are seeing a clear and focused image? If so, could some of the sets be defective? I have a fairly new 42 inch 1080p TV and the 3D episodes look pathetic on it and I can't blame my TV.

Love Those Knuckleheads!
by J. Moore (Jonesville, NC USA)
Many more of my favorite Stooges comedies are included here. All of them look great! My personal favorite Shemp Stooges comedies are Bubble Trouble & Loose Loot. These are remakes of earlier Stooges shorts which had become more frequent by the early 1950's because of Columia Pictures budget cuts. But it's seldom that remade movies are better than the originals. Three cheers to Sony Home Entertainment for putting out the Three Stooges in these dvd sets. I hope they will release the Stooges comedies with Joe Besser too. Those final Stooges shorts are regarded by fans & critics as the worst Stooges films ever. Still I have a couple of favorites with Joe Besser including A Merry Mix Up. I haven't seen this since it was shown on cable tv years ago. I hope it will be out on dvd before long. It just wouldn't seem fair not to release the Besser Stooges comedies too.

Wide screen cropping ruins these films. 3D is really crummy.
by L. Bachrach
Set 1 through 6 of the "collection series" had the best possible picture and sound quality. These were lovingly restored. They did the stooges justice.
Disk 2 of this set falls flat. The cropping to convert these shorts to widescreen was done by someone who had no sense of composition. The heads and feet are chopped off. The Stooge were great physical comics. Those details are critical. The earlier DVD releases of these films from 1953=54 are better.
Also, the 3D is lousy. Really lousy. Unwatchable.

ANOTHER SERVING OF "STOOGE" DELIGHT!
by THE CRITIC (Windsor, Ontario Canada)
The 22 digitally restored & remastered shorts created from 1952-1954 presented in the "Three Stooges Collection Volume 7" is further proof that Moe, Larry and Shemp were still as funny as ever in 52-54; and despite cutbacks at Columbia Pictures fans wouldn't get anything but their absolute best. Because Columbia Pictures decided to cut back on their budget the Stooges had to recycle some of the stock footage from earlier shorts and rename some of them as well.
The fantastic Three Stooges shorts found in Volume 7 are finally being presented on DVD as they were originally shown in Movie theaters; some in widescreen for the first time since their original release and as a fan I'm happy the widescreen shorts were included in this set. Sony Pictures has also done something wonderful by including 2-D versions of "Spooks" and "Pardon my Backfire" in this set as well as the 3-D versions and the 3-D glasses to view them with.
Sony Studios have to be commended once again for finally listening to the fans after all the years of inferior shorts and devoting precious time and meticulous care into the restoration of the 22 incredible stooge shorts found in Volume 7 and the entire remastered "Stooges" collection to date. The 22 digitally remastered & restored video transfers found in volume seven are simply amazing to say the least.
No longer do these magnificent shorts look like they were made over 50 years ago. Sony Pictures has given fans exactly what we've always wanted; the best picture & sound possible. The newly restored picture is pristine & the remastered soundtrack is perfect. All 22 shorts from 1952-1954 are presented on two single sided discs and packaged in slim cases. The disc artwork and packaging is fantastic to say the least, making this set even more attractive and highly collectible for any Stooge fan to own. The 22 newly restored & remastered shorts from Sony Pictures are once again presented in chronological order completely uncut, politically incorrect and presented in Beautiful Black & White. Hip Hip Hooray!

3-D or not 3-D, That is the question
by Daniel Siciliano (henderson, nevada USA)
I have been a stooge fan for over 40 years and have been amazed at the quality of these discs so far. You have probably heard this a million times, but this time it's true. You haven't seen the stooges until you've seen these discs. The prints are pristine. The black and white photography really shines. Crisp, clear and the contrast is outstanding. However, this latest disc boasts 2 original shorts available for the first time in 3-D. After attempting to watch them, boy was I dissapointed. The 3-D effect is almost non-existant. The picture is full of noise, ghosting and doubled images. The gags that have stuff popping out of the screen at you are just a bunch of ghosting, fuzzy images! These are magenta/green anaglyph 3-D, but it simply doesn't work. Years ago in the 70's when I saw these shorts in 3-D in theaters, they looked amazing. Now , what a poor and dissapointing way to introduce them to a new generation of audiences, especially now that we are smack-dab in the middle of a 3-D boom in theaters and home DVD. These shorts need to be re-done and presented the correct way. The rest of the collection, i absolutely love, but the 3-D leaves me scratching my head....why? or why not? Long live the stooges!
The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 7: 1952-1954 Summary
These 22 digitally remastered shorts from 1952-1954 were made during a tumultuous time for The Three Stooges. First, in 1952 Curly succumbed to the illness brought on by his stroke six years earlier; he was only forty-eight when he died. Shemp had really hit his stride by this time and he is at the top of his game in the new shorts from this period, but budget cutbacks at Columbia forced director Jules White to recycle some old footage, so although the work in this collection is first-rate, one can't help but wonder what could have been done if they'd had the opportunity to develop more new material. Fortunately, this era did leave us with such classics as the Stooges' first 3-D shorts, SPOOKS! (1953) and PARDON MY BACKFIRE (1953) ; SHOT IN THE FRONTIER (1954) a parody of the classic film High Noon ; and Larry's hilarious spoof of Brando in CUCKOO ON A CHOO CHOO (1952). These shorts are all presented as they were projected in the theaters; some in widescreen for the first time since their original release. The Three Stooges Collection Volume 7 shows how the genius of Moe, Larry and Shemp rose above all obstacles and enabled them to be the best at their craft.
