Doesn't tell the entire story
by Juanito Diego (United States)
This film has got some good performances, especially from Danny Kaye, but I was stunned that it completely failed to tell the entire story of the attempt by neo-Nazis to march through the town of Skokie. There is an important epiloge to the story that the film completely omits. As it turned out neo-Nazi leader Frank Collin's real name was Frank Cohen. Soon after the events portrayed in this film his fellow neo-Nazis discovered that he was Jewish. They also found out he was a pedophile and turned him in to police who subsequently arrested him. Collin was convicted of child molestation and sent to Pontiac prison in 1979. He served three years of a seven-year sentence. The fact that he was Jewish would have added a different dimension to the story and hence a more interesting story. But Hollwood perfers to paint everything in terms of black and white, so the more shocking story, the complete story of how a mentally unstable man and sexual predator turned against his own people, remains untold. Perhaps it is time that a remake of this film was made.

Moral Equivalency
by Laura Z. Hobson (USA)
Skokie was a television movie that I had strong memories about even after all these years.
It was interesting to see how I had changed because, obviously, the movie did not.
For anyone who is interested in the subject matter, I respectfully suggest purchasing a different movie. For those interested in an excellent dramatic performance by Danny Kaye, go ahead and buy it: for that, it is worth it.
My problem with the movie is that it presents all sides as if each are equally valid. When it comes to Nazis and those who represent them as well as those who stand their ground and protest them as violators of the 1st Amendment (i.e., this is NOT freedom of speech; it is an incitement to riot!); this movie bends over backward to justify the 'righteousness' of neo-Nazi/Nazi behavior and I find that reprehensible.
I am very glad I purchased it, however, because it shows me how I have evolved since first watching it on television all those years ago. So, you might also find it interesting to shed light on how your views/opinions have evolved or remained stagnant in the last couple of decades.
