The title of this sci-fi TV series (2007) refers not to a glorious era in history, but to the unlikely hero Age, in whose body resides the power of the "Heroic Race." Eons ago, the "Tribe of Gold" withdrew from this universe, leaving behind a series of prophecies and a power vacuum. The icy "Tribe of Silver," whose members look like humans photographed in black-and-white, employ the "Tribe of Bronze" (metallic mealworms) to oppress the "Tribe of Iron," a.k.a. humanity. On a crumbling planet, Princess Dhianeila discovers Age, a sort of wild child/idiot savant, whom she recognizes as the Fifth Nodos, the destined savior of mankind. Aboard her ship, Age discovers he can transform into Bellcross, a powerful cyborg that looks a lot like the Eva 01 in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Four other Nodos are held in servitude by the Tribe of Silver, and soon Age is belting them through asteroids in battles that recall Dragon Ball Z.

Despite a fulsome score and a plethora of elaborate CG effects, Heroic Age remains stolidly earthbound: The needlessly complicated storyline and portentous speeches feel like they were written by the Tribe of Lead. Even the antics of Age, who functions as a sort of space-age Mowgli, can't leaven this prosaic adventure. (Rated TV-PG: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon
