Haaz Sleiman shines
by Roger L. Vandermeer (Garden Grove, CA United States)
I rented this movie from netflix after researching Haaz Sleiman on the internet. I saw the trailer and saw that Haaz Sleiman appeared shirtless and I thought this movie was worth seeing. I fast forwarded through the entire movie unless Haaz Sleiman was in the scene. When he was asked to go on the Ski Trip, I hollered 'Don't go!'. He is a real hunk among the effeminate portrayals of homosexuality.

Nice Friendship flick
by M. Bell (Atlanta, GA)
I can relate to many aspects expressed in this film. It brings a special friend to mind. He know who he is.

Rehearsal to the "Noah's Ark"
by Michael Kerjman (The Earth)
"Ski Trip" looks instantly as some rehearsal to the "Noah's Arc - The Complete Second Season", of which much longer dialogues and self-confessions make this sometime-in-eighties produced movie much less entertaining.
Of course, relationship intrigue inter-linkage, scarcity of explicitly and not-so-much music played have to some extent been compensated with the New York City views although of a low-budget filmmaking.

Great Movie
by Jim W (New Jersey)
The name of this move is the Ski Trip yet no one ski's..Brilliant ! I found this dramedy a perfect blend of comedy and serious content. If you are looking for a film that features gay men of color I recommend this one. The Story was amusing , entertaining and sometimes touching .

Misused Potential
by Amos Lassen (Little Rock, Arkansas)
"The Ski Trip"
Misused Potential
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
"The Ski Trip" is not a good movie but neither is it a bad movie. It's silly but harmless--not bad enough not t watch but not good enough to give it my full attention. It has it pluses and minuses but the main fault is the lack of character development. I would have thought that without character development there would have been a good plot line. I was mistaken. If there is a storyline, I missed it completely.
The plot deals with a group of black gay men living in New York and dealing with life after 30. There is hope and there is love and even a few laughs. What the movie does show is the diversity within the black gay community. But we've met all of the characters before in other movies.
It's definitely a low-beget film but worse than that is that it has virtually no quality. The main characters go to a ski retreat in a small rented house. The house is just a house--nothing special but you would have thought it was the Sistine Chapel the way the guys are so proud of it.
A few of the characters go way over the top and they are flamboyant and excessively silly. When the leader of the group decides to take his friends as well as two lesbians on a ski trip, madness ensues. Someone got pregnant, two boys had their relationship tested and friendships became strained. One guy turned 30 with no progress in his future and was dumped by his boyfriend.
Some of the movie was just ridiculous. The scene with 6 men trying to squeeze into a car was a waste of time. What the movie did have was heart and as several other reviewers have said, it s refreshing to see Latino and black gays make it t the screen. However, for me that is the problem and I will probably get flack for saying this. I do not understand why there is a need for separatism--black, Latino, Polish, etc--what difference does it make and is it really necessary to have separate movies?
The Ski Trip Summary
Turning 30 is a damn difficult thing to do, especially if you're Corey Brown; an average Joe who is depressed over getting older, being out of shape and having just been dumped by his super hot boyfriend! So his friends decide to cheer him up by taking him on a fun filled weekend Ski Trip. His friends include the over-the-top Drama Queen, TERRY; His sexy, smart and sassy lesbian friend NIKKI; bitchy boy toy BYRON; sex crazy CARLOS; and OMAR, the sweet boy next door. A classic American romantic-comedy about looking for love in all the wrong places and finding it where you least expect it starring Black and Latino gay characters for the first time. These aren't simple queer characters; they are vibrant, articulate, strong and always hilarious.
