Well worth the time
by J. Moore (Grenada, MS United States)
I have previously reviewed the CD "Paris Rain" by Brenda, A CD that is heavily featured on the BET Jazz special. In fact, it was my desire to see how those songs work in a live setting, that lead me to order the DVD. First, the band is first rate, secondly the song selection and pacing of the concert is excellent. The performances are very close to the recorded versions but with a little extra improvisation thrown in. The audience seems a little subdued, maybe still unfamiliar with the new material. They start to get enthused when she sings "If only for one night" and "Piano in the Dark" and they almost let loose on the 'let's go to church' finale of "So Good, So Right". "Please Felipe" a wonderful collaboration with Brazilian Ivan Lins, is Brenda's finest performance of the night. So why four stars and not five?....Brenda's voice is a little weak and breathy at times; as if she is having difficulty controlling her tone. And because there is little in the way of extras apart from an obvious pitch for the Album "Paris Rain" and the BETjazz cable channel, it loses a star.

One of the Most Underrated Artists
by mistermaxxx@yahoo.com (usa)
Brenda Russell is a very versatile Artist.be it at the Paino where She has Written quite a few classic songs or Her rich Voice she has always been a Top Tier Artist. She is truly an Artist that I always pull for because I know How Talented she is.this Performance shows She is still a Force to Be reckon with&if given a fair chance to shine she could easily hang.

This is simple magical
by Ndumiso Madlala ((KwaZulu-South Africa))
What a perfomance from Brenda, after disappearing from the music scene for so many years you would be fooled to think her voice has gone rusty, instead she delivers some of the songs with amazing accuracy. The whole DVD is full of mouthwatering songs that should keep one's eyes glued to this DVD. My favourite tune is "please felipe" where she teases the crowd and shows that she can still move in a very nice seduction style. Nice work Brenda, thanks for the magic.
The Jazz Channel Presents Brenda Russell (BET on Jazz) Summary
Discover Your Sense Of Jazz With The Amazing Contemporary Jazz And R&b Vocalist Brenda Russell As She Performs Live On "jazz Central." This Soulful Concert Was Taped At Bet's Studio Ii In Washington, D.c., And Features Russell Singing Jazz And Blues In Her Unique Style With A Voice You'll Never Forget! Songs: Expect A Miracle, Catch On, She's In Love, Way Back When, If Only For One Night, Walkin' In New York, Love And Paris Rain, In An Ideal World, Piano In The Dark, Please Felipe, Something About Your Love, So Good So Right, Get Here.
Brooklyn-born, Toronto-raised, singer-songwriter Brenda Russell started her career writing songs with her ex-husband Leon Russell. She emerged a solo artist in her own right in the mid-'80s and burst on the pop/urban contemporary scene with intimate and uplifting tunes like "If Only for One Night" and "Way Back When." This live concert from Black Entertainment Television, which also includes a revealing "Meet the Artist" interview, spotlights Russell's satisfying cache of songs. Backed by a quicksilver combo, Russell's laid-back vocals deliver the goods on her best-known compositions, including her heart-rending "Gulf War" ballad "Get Here," her catchy early blockbuster "So Good, So Right," and her greatest hit, "Piano in the Dark." What makes Brenda Russell so appealing is that her music easily fits into quiet storm, soul, and adult contemporary formats, while remaining true to its own artistic voice. That balance is hard to get these days.
