great impact
by Calvin J. Ramsey (hartsville,tn)
This is another one of my favorites..A woman who has everything including a husband who worships her, wants him dead for a no good boyfriend. The story shows how right can win over wrong if we persevere.Brian Donlevy's character meets a good woman by accident when his wife thinks he's dead, hoping she's got the fortune to spend as she likes.Only to find months later that her crooked boyfriend is dead instead by his own hand.Ella Raine's character gives Brian Donlevy hope once again..

A Good Way to Spend a Couple Hours
by Stephen Kaczmarek (Columbus, Ohio United States)
Once in a while a movie sneaks up on me, delighting in ways that make up for its imperfections. "Impact" certainly qualifies, a sometimes quirky, sometimes remarkably effective little thriller that's one part Frank Capra and one part Howard Hawks. Pugnacious Brian Donlevy stars as Walt Williams, a blue collar lug whose hard work and sharp mind take him to the top of a manufacturing company. Unfortunately, his trophy wife (icy Helen Walker) unrepentantly schemes to have him killed by her oily lover (talented writer/actor Tony Barrett), only as the best laid plans often do . . . By the time he meets spunky good girl Marsha Peters (striking Ella Raines), he's bottomed out -- perhaps the best thing that ever could happen to decent guy like him. "Impact" explores the darkness of the human soul but unlike contemporary films, never falls victim to losing faith in the human condition. Without being preachy, it reminds us that monsters often come in pleasing forms and that trust should be neither easily earned nor quickly dismissed. While it suffers from a meager budget, director Arthur Lubin does a competent job, often filming on what looks like sets and locations left over from Hitchcock's "Vertigo." Watch the models in a mountainside car crash scene to see the attention to detail (hint: look at the driver's side of the car). Anna May Wong and Philip Ahn have to suffer through ricky-ticky caricatures of Chinese Americans common in the day, but the latter does get a great line that ironically challenges the stereotype. Charles Coburn does a good bit as an Irish-American flatfoot, and keen eyes will spot Jason Robards' dad as the judge in the inevitable court room scene.

Flawed but Gripping and Well Worth Watching
by JamesNYC (New York, NY USA)
This reviewer had never heard of IMPACT when it was recommended by Amazon. I recognized the male lead, Brian Donlevy, as having played the cruel sergeant in one of my all-time favorites, BEAU GESTE, but it was Anna May Wong who really piqued my interest in the film.
Donlevy plays a wealthy, San Francisco engineering executive, Walter Williams, whose sultry, younger wife (played by Helen Walker) plots his murder with her paramour. Wong plays the Williams' maid. After the murder attempt fails and the wife's lover is killed in a flaming car wreck, the police (and everyone else) think that Mr. Williams is the one who died. (It was his car.) A heart-broken Williams, having learned of his wife's betrayal, decides to lay low in a small Idaho town as his wife is prosecuted for his murder. There he falls in love with a war widow (played by Ella Raines) who convinces him to go home and clear things up.
Implausibly, however, after Mr. Williams goes to the San Francisco police, his wife is set free and he instead ends up on the stand, accused of murdering his wife's boyfriend. Although Williams' predicament seems unreal, the film still remains interesting.
Anna May Wong, who starred in silent films, is in her mid-40s here, but she looks great for her age. Her radiant beauty and stage presence still shine through. If I had to take any of the females in this flick with me to a desert Island, I would easily pick Wong over the younger actresses, Walker and Raines, who are both very attractive nevertheless.
Impact Summary
They're one kiss away from MURDER! Millionaire industrialist Walter Williams is marked for murder by his sexy young wife and her seedy lover. When the insidious plot ends in a fiery disaster, Williams is thought dead. In reality, he finds himself without a clue as to who he is or what happened. But as his memory starts to return, his shattered life becomes a runaway roller coaster ride of suspense and excitement! Beautifully photographed on location in San Francisco, this hard-boiled drama snaps with smart dialogue, a hell-frosted broad and more twists than a rusty corkscrew. "Impact" is truly a forgotten film noir masterpiece.
