Not Your Field of Dreams
by Emmie (North Carolina)
Bought this movie (based on reviews) prior to a trip to Ireland. DEPRESSING movie. It is not one that will make you want to see the Irish countryside or meet the people. (As a side note: both the Ireland and its people are lovely!) The only thing I could identify with was the hard work that went into preparing the land for cultivation by removing all of the rocks and mucking the land. The rest of the movie seemed to be poorly written fiction with "name" actors who did not measure up to their meager roles. This movie is best left in the jewel case or on the shelf.

Nicely done
by Scholar (USA)
Great film. Tom Berringer is a bit stiff and his role as an American is very stereotypical. Luckily he gets killed in the movie before he can speak too much. Harris is EXCELLENT!

Stunningly emotional film
by P. Aha (MA)
This is a well acted, well written, heartrending movie. What stuck me when I saw this in the theater was that as the credits were rolling not a soul moved. No one got up, no one spoke; that's how powerfully moving this film is. The first time you see it, it can take your breath away.

A parable of Irish History
by R. J. Marsella (California)
Richard Harris' performance as Bull McCabe a tenant farmer determined to preserve a way of life that is threatened by progress (represented by the American played by Tom Berenger) drives this film. The story has qualities of a classic tragedy almost King Lear like in McCabe's obsession and ultimate downfall.
The screenplay is excellent and the locations and authenticity of the settings lend the film a realistic atmosphere that is truly outstanding.
Very well directed with not a wasted scene. A true quality production that got little notice but deserves to be seen by anyone with an interest in Ireland.

The Field
by Dorrie Scherer (SAN JOSE CALIF.)
I think it was great to see how people lived in Ireland . What their problems were..
The Field Summary
A Tradition-bound Irishman Who Has Devoted His Life To Cultivating His Field Finds Himself Fighting To Preserve Everything He Believes In When The Field Is Put Up For Sale. Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. Release Date: 02/26/2002 Starring: Richard Harris John Hurt Run Time: 113 Minutes Rating: Pg13
After scoring an art-house hit and Oscar nominations for his previous film,
My Left Foot
, Irish director Jim Sheridan made this ambitious and hard-hitting drama, set in Ireland during the 1930s, about one man's obsession with a plot of land that his family has tended for generations. The results are decidedly mixed, and it's obvious that this kind of tragic allegory is better suited for the stage (where it originated as a play by John B. Keane). What makes the film worthwhile is the Oscar-nominated performance by Richard Harris as "Bull" McCabe, the fiercely stubborn man who's nurtured a prime field of rented land for decades, only to lose it when the owner auctions the land to an unwelcome American (Tom Berenger). Rather than sacrifice his life's work to this brazen invader, McCabe wages a personal war with powerfully tragic results. It's unfortunate that this potent drama never really connects on an emotional level, but Harris is never less than fascinating in a role that seems to virtually consume him as an actor. His performance approaches greatness, even when the film falls somewhat short of its dramatic ambitions.
