A Heart-warming story.
by Apples (Kansas City, MO)
I saw this movie on television and was so moved by this true story, that I bought the DVD and put it our church library.

Nice Movie... but the book was better...
by E. Pooley (Miami, Florida United States)
I recently found this book in a vacations resort and I read it on a few days... The story was very simple and beautiful, and make you think about the basic and really important things of life. My thoughts were how to spread the simple message of the book, especially to my teenage sons and daughters.
So, I searched for the movie and found this version which I quickly bought from Amazon, as it was not available in any kind of local rental or legal download site.
Well, I must say that as most of times, the movie was not at the level of the book. Even though it is a nice movie and the story is well adapted (with some variations form the book, specially all the ending), it's not able to provoke the emotions of the book and make you think a little about life...
At the end, the comments of my kids were "nice movie"... and they left to continue with their issues...
If you enjoyed the first half of the movie "Children in Stripes Pajama" you probably must see this movie, especially because of the happy ending that will leave you more optimistic than in that other movie.
In summary, It worth to be seen as family, as it can motivate conversations with older kids, but it won't change your life...

Who is David?
by Ross Bills (Australia)
A refugee from the gulag, a journey, a bundle. Half a loaf of bread, a compass, a pocket knife and a bar of soap: Is this enough for a journey of thousands of kilometres? David sets out to find himself, the "who" of David, and a place in the world. In the process we find out the "why" of David, why he is in this situation. Faithful to the spirit of the book it is also a warning. We have developed the knack of allowing people like David to become invisible. The mystery of the soap ultimately is made clear. Read the book and/or watch the movie for a truly moving experience. The extras on the disc are well worth the time spent viewing them. Especially the other "Davids", who are even now making the same journey. Shown in New York in 2004 at a Refugee forum, its message is still relevant.

A Hearwarming Story
by S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA)
This is one of the rare low budget movies that is really outstanding.
It is the story of a 12 year old boy named David (Ben Tibber) who has grown up in a Bulgarian concentration camp after WWII. It is the only life that he has known. An older prisoner, Johannes (Jim Caviezel), and one other surprising person take an interest in him and provide him with some assistance and a rudimentary plan to escape. The story is all about his trek across Europe heading for Denmark.
As one might imagine, a 12 year old with little sophistication and life experience would have a rather challenging time in such a journey. He encounters both good and bad people and has a variety of interesting experiences. There is a major twist at the end.
This is a very good story about overcoming adversity and is extremely touching. I recommend it.

David, a movie to learn by
by Eileen T. Doyle (Florida)
It is a suspense story that has a surprise ending. It would seem that there are many more stories of children caught up in the machinations of a corrupt government. I hope they have the courage to tell their stories so the rest of us can learn how to survive what appears to be inevitable. You will not be disappointed with this movie.

I Am David is adapted from Anne Holm's internationally acclaimed novel North to Freedom. It is the story of a 12-year-old boy, David, who escapes a Communist concentration camp with little more than a compass, a sealed letter, a loaf of bread, and instructions to carry the letter to Copenhagen, Denmark. David is thrust into the free world for the first time in his young life as he travels across Europe. It is a spiritual voyage of discovery, where David slowly loses his instinctual mistrust of humanity and begins to smile, share, trust and ultimately, love.
