"Live in NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency" documents five magical nights that happened in January of 2008. During his residency at New York's Sullivan Hall, Marco Benevento surrounded himself with musicians that are known for playing in the crossroads where jazz and jamband meet. Guests include Billy Martin, Reed Mathis, David Fiuczynski, DJ Olive, John Ellis, Marc Friedman, Skerik, Stanton Moore and so the list goes on. "The Sullivan Hall Residency" is a concert documentary. Live scenes of various lengths are peppered with interviews. The most interesting interviews include those by Reed Mathis, Billy Martin and C. Calvin Weston. The musical content is phenomenal. Benevento and company really rip things up. Sonically, most of the groups play what is a meeting between rock and improvisational jazz. The psychedelic factor is through the roof. Indeed, the jams are other worldly. With the exception of volume issues on the guitars, the audio quality is excellent. The video quality is lo-fi in terms of the camera footage and the final editing. That written, it is very well done and the production never distracts from the power of the content. The only potential issue is that the viewer can't choose to enjoy the music without the interviews. The film itself is about an hour and a half, but the disc is packed with bonus songs like Zeppelin's 'What Is and What Should Never Be' and Pink Floyd's 'Fearless.' Marco Benevento has two things going for him. First, he's evolving into a first rate musician. Second, he's documenting his journey so those of us at home can come along for the ride.
